rust repair

just to throw some more prices in to the mix, I recently had the following done at Specialised Paintwork in Reading: 2 new outer sills (genuine Porsche) both front wings removed, bottom of each wing cut off, new sections fabricated and welded in new section of floor in driver's footwell all stone chip along bottom of car (both sides) removed, metal cleaned up, small repair to front of rear arch on both sides, primer and stone chip reapplied respray all above areas waxoyl sprayed inside sills I was fortunate in that all the repair work was contained within the stone chip area, making the respray a lot easier and cheaper than it might have been. Total cost came to approx £2500, including a 10% discount that Specialised give to PCGB members. Not exactly cheap but the quality of the work is excellent. Unfortunately I do not have any decent pictures of the work in progress!

To throw another price into the mix: Front bumper stripped, repaired (broken strut) and painted. Badge panel repaired (rust spot and dent) and painted. Light covers painted. Mild denting on bonnet removed (stones), then painted. Rust cut out and new metal welded in at the rear of both front arches, the front of each rear arch, and a small section on the offside outer sill then all painted. Windscreen surround ground back to metal (mild rust), repaired, and roof painted and blended. Temporary (ground to metal, rust proofed, and painted) repair to base of arch behind rear wheels (to be done properly when funds allow, just keeping it at bay). Sealant around rear lights re-applied to tidy appearance. Waxoil in sills. £1100 all in (plus £300 for the new windscreen I decided to fit). Lovely job.

Took action today with my black 90 turbo, prompted by the start of corrosion in all the places we have mentioned and a poorly front right wing bottom that i am scared may need replacement...cut a long story short its getting picked up tommorow for a full monty zooma paintjob, won't see her for up to 5 weeks[&o][&o]But when she comes back should be spanking, there is so much that needs doing instead of join the dots i am going for the full monty, will post pics when i get her back...really exited[:)]

And I am told it is quite easy to damage them getting them off the car as well.
Yup, my bodyshop guy says he doesn't know how breakers manage to get them off in one piece, he literally had to cut my old wings off. Perhaps that has something to do with the silly prices they go for 2nd hand! Cheers, Robbo [/quote] I would go to a different body shop guy- the wings unbolt!! No need to cut them off. yes there is a lot of sealer hiding the bolts at the back and when you have removed all the bolts, the wings just sit there looking at you, but any decent body guy would know to get out the heat gun and scraper, soften the sealant with hot air and scrape it off then the wings can be removed undamaged. I did this on my car for repairs and re-paint of the drivers side wing and did not damage the wing, and I'm merely an amateur restorer.

What Mark failed to say is this will be a full glass out respray with any problematical areas rectified as they find them. He also failed to mentioned the euphoric giggly state he was in when I spoke to him today :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: after he'd just picked up a full seat of rubber seals from the OPC. Big Kid [;)] His car will be fantastic when it comes back [:)] It's great that so many of our cars are having proper bodywork restorations carried out at the moment. As they all approach 20 years and beyond it's crunch time for many that will head off to the breakers, but hopefully a large number will get restored and stay with us for another 20 [8D]

The work should be starting on my car next week, I managed to get a really good second hand wing for £165 delivered. The body shop is going to replace the wing respay it and fix the rear for £600 ( does that sound OK?)

I am just having my final bits and peices rectified after a lot of body work aswell. Windscreen out. Slight amount of corrosion on front leading edge of roof sorted and roof repainted. And then a new windscreen fitted. Wings off and brand new front wings fitted. Badge panel and light pods repainted. Bonnet repainted. Sills taken back checked restone chipped and painted including behind the rear wheels. Waxoyled inside of sills. Rear badge panel above number plate painted and into the rear hatch area and around pins. New drivers door (hinge had snapped inside) fitted and repainted. New teardrop mirrors fitted and painted to match. And a few light scratches marks on the rear quarters sorted. Looks fab now [:D] Very happy

Lee, I didn't realise you had had so much done!! Reminds me of the old broom story..... "I've had this broom for 30yrs; it's had 5 new handles and 6 new heads, but its still the same broom...."!![;)] Just noticed the 968 mirrors bit and I'm now very jealous.....[8|] Roll on August 13th....[:D]

Hi Nick To most people including my friends(who think I am a bit anal with it!!!!) , they thought it was in lovely condition already. But I am a picky bugger and like things to be as spot on as possible, within reason. It was done as preventative medicine aswell as did not want things getting worse. I was just going to have the bottoms of the wings "touched" in at the front, but got a very good deal on OEM front wings, so could not say no to them so it now looks fantastic. Having a few bits fettled at the moment, hence the car away again at the moment. Hope to have it back mid next week some time. See you on "that" wednesday night[;)]

Just to recap, I repaired the RHS front wing on my 944 last year as a project on a restoration course. If you're interested, words and pictures are here [link=http://homepages.gotadsl.co.uk/~jgm/ekmm/porsche944.htm]http://homepages.gotadsl.co.uk/~jgm/ekmm/porsche944.htm[/link]
