Rusty Sills and Hello

Hi all,

Picked up a 1984 944 Lux on the weekend with a couple of months MOT and have been going over what it needs sorting for the up coming MOT.

Anyhow the big thing is the sills have seen better days, I haven't got it up on a lift yet but after a quick shufty they need doing along the full length both sides. Also the inner arches t the rear (ascesable from the boot) need attention also, but are not too far gone and can be patched.

Are there repair panals available? If so where from and any guide price.

I spent most of last night sorting out the old alarm wiring as most were just bare cable ends going nowhere.. there is another alrm fitted thats causing me fun but on the whole its pretty good, starts on the button and drives smoothly. Im very happy with it. It has lots of history and the Timing belt/balance belts have been done recently.

Hi Craig, and welcome.

Search back over a few months here and you'll see plenty of info on sill repair. Buy the proper parts from a porsche centre, they fit properly and aren't always more expensive. Search for Peter Empson's thread with full picture record is a good place to start, make sure you're sitting down tho.

Cheers. I Found some threads.. £130 odd for the outer sills is not too bad..I'll stick it on a lift and see if I need them or if it can be patched.. Tahnkfully I can get the work done at my mates garage and if im helping out it won't cost much :)

I'll post some photos once I have had a look so you can give a second opinion :)

Hey I just noticed.. the Forums badge is the same as the one I have in my windscreen.. guess it used to belong to a member :)

Welcome Craig. The prices for the genuine parts are on the first update on this page of my site, however I'm really not sure if they're still the same as it was over a year ago now. Well worth calling Exeter OPC as they're very competitive on pricing (don't forget there's a club discount too). The aftermarket sills aren't great by all accounts so it's best to go with the genuine ones, they're not that expensive and will save a lot of labour.

<Edited to add> I'm too slow at typing [:)]. Looking forward to hearing about the work and seeing the pics, hope it's not too bad.

Wow thats a lot of work you did there, I hope mine doesn't require that much work, but time will tell. I have a few other jobs to do on my play thing first before I start on the Porsche (My sensible car apparently)

Yeah also a member of scooby net :) Sold my scooby in January as it was costing a fortune in petrol and insurance. I replaced it with a land rover discovery (landies are my other love) but it was far to boring for driving back and fro to work so I sold it and got the 944 for a little less than the slae price of the disco :)

Anyhow I attach a picture of the 944 and my other toy in the background, which makes the 944 look fuel efficient!

I was a knowledgeable SN member, before forgetting all about Classic Imprezas and remembering all about old Porsches... [:D]

Lol - my classic garage line up would be the 944 and a Landie. Sadly the Hiace is more useable as a works van. [&o]

I joined scoobynet until I realised that they have no idea what a Legacy is. A bit like a Porsche forum that only recognises 911s. Hence this site has the largest number of posts on the 944 forum area. [:)]

Yes this looks too be a good forum :) Great advise and welcome so far. I prefer all motor cars to turbo.. they just feel better to drive IMHO.. The series landy has a completely nut and bolt rebuilt 3.5 v8 under the bonnet that I did last winter in my spare bedroom.. oh the misses was happy when it went into the landy!

My SN username is similar to my PH one Paul: Id have helped if I could, but it is more of an Impreza Turbo forum, as opposed to a Subaru range forum. The single turbo chargecooled BC5 was popular too, as well as the later intercooled twin sequential turbocharged BD5s to a lesser degree. Normally aspirated Legacys would always have drawn a blank, or a link to the Legacy forums at best. Now of course, you can only really find out about 'dump valves' and Lexus lites (sic).....

Well my MOT is up in two days and the holes in the sills have got bigger [:(]

So its up onto Mr ramp, to prod her with Mr Mig and see what I cando to repair. Its not going to be that pretty.. But should make her solid again :) I have had the carpets up and theres no intrusion into the floor pan, wel theres a small hole in the passenger footwell but thats an easy fix. Biggest issues are around the rear arches and drivers side jacking point..

I will take some photos when I get the work started!

On MGBs and 944s, I've found that where it has been patched, the rust will only ever spread again. The only way to do it is the cut the rot out. I did this on my MGB GT (new Castle section) and despite it being £200 in labour it wouldn't have been much less in patching and the new section will last years, not months. Again even on them, the Heritage panels take alot less fettling than the Steelcraft panels and the latter ain't too bad for repros!

Still, welcome to the club!

I will be cutting all the rot out, don't worry about that :) And when I say patching I mean quite substantial new plates. I am lucky enough to have asccess to free steel sheet, a plasma cutter, and a lift. Its cost me about £16 in materials so far but will probably take three or four evenings work.

Cheers for the warning though :)

eek.. This is the result of the first bit of chopping the other night. Its pretty bad.. but will be as good as new before long :)

Meh, that's nothing compared to the sills I saw on a certain Japanese coupe this week. The outer looked fine, but the inner sidemembers were getting quite crusty!

Some channel and plates welded in tying all the good metal together! Still a bit to do and then grin all the welds flat so it looks nice. And spray with underseal. Should be as good as new :)

Then its the other side []

Probably about 3 hours work gone into it so far
