S2 cutting out

Hi Oli

I watching this with interest as my S2 has started to do the not starting hot thing. It will turn over fine and catch but is as if there is very little fuel getting into the car as it runs very quiet and lumpy with no power. Flooring the throttle makes no difference. Then its like it's flicked a switch and vroom off it goes no problem. Ive changed the DME and the fuel pressure regulator at the end of the fuel rail where the fuel lines attach. Also Changed the damper at the other ( front ) end of the fuel rail and the sensor for the water temp that sits on the head. Only does it when its hot and not even every time its hot.

BTW I have a bucket of frogs and a large tub of swarfega if that's any use to you.

Colin,

That sounds very like my won't-hot-start issue. The only difference is that if it is doing it (i.e. running badly) then using the throttle pedal will cause it to die. When it's happening then you sit and wait and it usually coughs and then runs fine (like flicking a switch, as you said) but sometimes it will gently die, and I try and re-start. Sometimes this will be fine, sometimes it does the poor-running thing for 2 or 3 times on a trot.

The suggestion is that it's the valve on the fuel pump and I have a new valve to fit, but no time in which to do it!

Oli.

P.S. Thanks for the offer of the bucket of frogs and the tub of swarfega. Do you think you could throw in a giraffe and a curly-wurly as well?

the Hot start issue when it fires but runs like a bucket can be the fuel pressure retaining valve in the pump at the rear,

the valve retains the 2.5 / 3.0 bar pressure in the rail for about 20 mins, the fuel under pressure will not boil and fill the rail and injectors with vapour and stop the car starting

Giraffes are getting increasingly difficult to get hold of unfortunately. Curly wurlys are not a problem. Could you make do with a zebra.

Ps. I remember you offering a bucket of frogs etc a couple of years back on here. Lol.

Zebras aren't as good as giraffes (although they are more fun) so we'd have to have two of them. As well as the curly-wurly, natch.

Frogs are sooooo two years ago I'm amazed you even asked!

Hi,

My 944 had these symptoms. It turned out to be a faulty DME. I had it refurbished by ATP Electronics. It was diagnosed by tapping the DME case with a screwdriver handle while turning the none starting engine over. Suddenly the engine sprang into life.
