S2 Starting trouble.??

Hi Folks
Hope you chaps can help me out....

My S2 seems to be having a bit of difficulty in starting when its only just got warm...

First thing in the AM is no problem , in fact it catches first time ..IE the car + engine IS stone cold...
Its when the car has been run for aprox 5miles or so "from cold". IE the engine has just got warm.
.. The engine turns over ok on the starter , + tries to fire but does seem to want to "catch" .
If i continue to turn it over , it will eventually catch BUT after a lot of "embarasing spluttering from the engine".[:)]

Has any body experienced the same "fault" + do you have a fix.?????
Yours hopingly ....

My cab got a bit like that in the early summer. Not to try to fix it specifically but for other reasons really it got a new battery and then a couple of months later a reconned starter motor and it was fine after. In fact I think just the battery fixed it as it was sloooow even for an S2 on the old one. It was noticeably slow with the old starter even on the new battery once I had heard it fairly whizz over (well, churn confidently) with the new one though. The other thing that can make a difference is the earth strap from the battery.

Cheers Fen
Its got a new battery on already.....

Like i say its great first thing in the AM its just when its warmed up...or partly warm.??

Yes, mine was too, just when it was warm or hot also in my case I think. It was fine when it was cold.

can you both confirm what it's like on a normal start, when i start mine when cold it takes 5-7 hickups of the starter motor to start the engine, when its been out a drive and switched off then restarted when warm it can take an extra couple of hickups. Is that normal even in the cold to take so many turns ? it's been suggested to me that it's normal but i am not convinced, i understand its a big block and a small starter motor but surely Porsche wouldn't have designed it to sound like that on each start up ?

Cheers

If by hiccup you mean it sort of fires but doesn't catch then no, not normal. All S2 churn over a few times before they fire but I read somewhere (here probably) that the crank sensor has to see rotation of a certain speed before it will allow the plugs to spark. Normal is 3-5 churns over then it catches and starts cold, warm or hot I would say but they always sound slow compared with other cars, even other 944s.

Mine does the churning ~ very slowly. I'd like to hear a few more starting to see how mine compares.

When it does fire it starts cleanly though. Hot or cold.

Except one time when I think I had my foot on the pedal, and it started & died, and then wouldn't idle without some throttle.

I take it there is some sort of throttle calibration upon startup (?) [&:] (if that smiley doesn't mean "confused" then imagine another one that does)

Rob Holmes of West Midlands region was told by his OPC after extensive digging around that the 16V cars do wait until a certain number of senses before injecting the fuel. Dunno whether that is gospel, but it does sound good. All S2s that I have heard turn over a few times before catching, and it does make you think your starter is sluggish. Mines been like that for over 6 years and 60k miles now.

My Turbo catches just like that [:)] It's nice to have cars with personality

Dave your warm start does not sound normal [&:]

Yes by hickup i meant turnover (was tired and lazy thinking when i typed it)

It then (as others also describe) starts cleanly, so 5 or 6 turnovers and then a clean start is fine then ?

Does seem like a strange way of attracting attention, by the time i've done that in a busy area there are usually 3 or 4 guys heading my way with a set of jump leads ready to hand [;)]

It does take a couple of extra turnovers when starting it with the engine warm.

Cheers, glad i'm not alone then.

I have heard you car start and it does not take 6 when cold and 8 when hot. More like 3 or 4!!!

Either too much drumming or poor memory, i drive the car every day at least twice and i can assure you it takes 5-7 turnovers each start (for the first time only 4 tonight) and when warm its a couple more turnovers. FACT.

Well 4 times tonight and every time i have heard it start [8D]

I remember that with my S2, that it would turn over maybe 5 or 6 times before it caught. And as for the smell of petrol...[]

What I did notice was that if I turned the key but didnt turn over the engine that it was easier to start...

ie: turn engine on... let the pump run for a few seconds whilst pumping the accelerator. turn off and on again... the car would then start first time from cold...

Never really had any starting issues when warm in fairness - well there was that whole fuel pressure damper / DME relay issue last summer....

I don't think so, and this isn't helping Big Dave UK.

Sorry for hyjacking the thread.

Dave,
DME's can break down due to heat build up, might be worth changing it. There was a good article on this problem in Porsche 911 & World. Take the relay out to give some air and cool it down, or try a spare.

Otherwise might be fuel related, vaporisation due to excess heat!!

Is the level of fuel in the tank low!

Open the fuel filler cap to relieve any pressure that may have built up let - just a thought.

Make sure all the vacuum pipes are securely connected, work your way thru the basics really.

Is the car running the std/proper plugs? My S2 had turbo plugs in it when I got it!!
Hope this may help

Ta for the ideas,,,

The plugs are brand new + the proper ones.
The fuel tank is half full,
The DME is the new type 993 type.
The car is NOT hot , just warmed up....

Ive been told that the throttle position sensor could be "malfunctioning"+ that the cars have a "cold" start mode , some kind of "auto choke"...that may also be faulty...

The car also seems to pull "well" when cold but seems to loose its "edge" when warmed up a bit...
As if its in a "limp home / reduced power mode".....

I will get to the bottom of this.....[8|][8|][8|][]
+ will post results WHEN ive found out what is causing the problem.....

OR

Maybee i should just book it in to 9M for a SC kit.??????

I don't suppose Dave got to the bottom of this did he? He said he would post the answer when he found it but I've searched high and low and no sign. This would be really helpful as I have exactly the same symptoms. Starts from cold on the button, same when hot but if left after just being started, to get the car onto the road long enough to wash it for example, it's the devils own job to get it to start again. It always does start but only after lots of cranking, coughing and spluttering!

Ok, no takers then? I've done a systematic check and it looks like it's the fuel pressure regulator thats at fault. So, where's the best pace to get one. It's a bosch part but is it 944 specific?
TIA Chris

My neighbour had his done at a local Bosch specialist, recommended by a local garage but I'm sure they would be in the yellow pages, all in was a bit over the £100 mark.
