S2 steering noise

ORIGINAL: richthomas
Mine does this too, and the only way to describe the sound is exactly like George did, running your finger round the rim of a glass. I put it down to lifting caliper plates making to pad just rub the disc, but could be fluid related. I get all the same symptoms as George, and it only occurs when turning right. If i touch the brake while doing it, it stops, so that is what lead me to think it is caliper related. Normally happens as I turn on to my drive, or into my road, both right handers.
I've never tried touching the brakes while its happening - I'll give it a try next time and see if that has an effect.

On reading the colours thread again I was just wondering where you were, Rich. Apologies if you have been posting and I haven't noticed, but I don't think I've seen you for a while.

Anyway my S2 cab did it and it had the brakes refurbed and original stick-on anti-chatter things fitted, though it is curious that braking seems to make a difference.

This is very common. If no-one is around then I just let it go, but if there are a group of poeple around or a lady, then your best bet is to pretend yo be yawning and they will think "Wow, that guy sounds like a LION ! I better stay out of his way" and the lady will think "Yum yum, I like that".
In fact, if the problem goes away, I suggest draining fluid to get that noice back again.

I'd describe it as a howl, but I'm sure it's the same noise. It is something to do with the RHD pipes having a different harmonic I believe, and it also has something to do with age as clearly Porsche would have fixed the problem if it had afflicted new cars. Fluid changes help sometimes, but not always.
Is this noise only when turning or at slow speeds?
Apart from the pump "groan" at full lock mine has an intermittant humming noise which comes and goes when driving usually when warmed up (nothing at all when stationary) - it doesn't seem to to increase/decrease with accelleration or change with clutch control - it just comes and goes but i'm sure it can be felt through the steering wheel.

I've only heard ot when turning the wheels a lot at slow speeds, especially reversing. I've heard it described as being like Chewbacca, which is a reasonable description actually.

Hmm, that's not my noise then as it does seem to stop on turning the wheels.Wonder if i've got a dry bearing perhaps.

Hey Fen. I have been really busy - mainly getting Colin Mcrae Dirt finished which is nearly there, so haven't been posting for a while. I do keep an eye on here when I can though, just to keep up to date!

I think there could be a few different noises going on here, that all sound similar when trying to describe them. Mine does sound a bit like Chewbacca as Fen described, but definatley stops if you apply the brakes, and mostly seems to happen when turning right, although I have had it when reversing too. I have even heard it at a much lower level when travelling at about 30mph, and if there is a slight bend in the road. Doesn't always do it, but normally happens when I turn into my road (about 15-20) then into my drive. Don't doubt it could still be fluid, but guess I'll find out once I have my calipers sorted.

Well, despite being the one who started this thread, I haven't been able to get it to make the noise for a few days now!

I've never heard it while travelling at any speed, only ever when manouevering, and thinking about it, steering wheel to the right and in reverse is the time I can remember hearing it - reversing into the garage.

Oh well, I'll keep trying...
