S2 wing repair

Hi all,

I need a rough idea of what it'll cost to cut out and repair a lower wing section on an S2. It's not too bad, certainly not a new wing, but it can't be ignored. It looks as if it'll be just to the underseal line, so an easy paint job as well.

I would appreciate any guide prices as I have a big decision to make....[8|][8|]

i am having both front wings (lower sections) and sills repaired / replaced (i am providing sills) and painted black for £500 in notes by a chap who has previously worked on my lux to a very good standard.

hope that helps.

i would say a repair and respray shouldnt cost more than £150 at the right place if you trust them and if you remove the wing first and fit it.

cheers - see you on sunday

Hi Paul

That's of interest to me too...at last I must get around to doing the n/s sill, but now notice the lower front wing on that side's bubbling too.

I took it to Specialised Paintwork for an opinion at the end of last year (on my way back from Northway)...they reckoned about £500 for the sill. They reckon they do at least one 944 a month, so hopefully they'd do a good job. Don't want to find it needs doing again after a few years.

After the Cotswold Rally (and before Prescott) I'll call in again, maybe next week for another chat and to book it in. I'll let you know!

Thinking of buying an S2 then Paul?

Might be. The car's right, the money's right, I just need to work out a realistic budget for the list of little niggles. And wait for a full report on it. Was nice to drive, though, and I'm a little bit keen. [&:]

Positive points are is it's titanium, my third favorite colour after Cobalt and Maritime, has nice leather, a new clutch, belts & water pump etc., tyres, wheel re-furb, great history and solid sills. [8D][8D]

Bad points are that it's got the one rusty wing, and possibly a wheel bearing. So, not the worst car ever....I'll let you know if I do get it!

Wooo-Hoooo! Great news indeed! (I can almost forgive you the comments on the other thread if you buy an S2!)

Rusty wing and wheel bearing are not show-stoppers, surely? If it's a front wheel bearing I'll give you a hand changing it.

It looks, or at least sounds, like a rear.

No, neither are going to be deal breakers. Just that I want to be totally secure if I go for it. I've sold my house, and will be able to do this if the sale goes through. If there's a problem and the sale falls through, I will be left with 2 944s and no money, if one has a rusty wing that's fine if it's about £150, not if it was, say, £500.

Next problem is getting a decent price for VJ, that's a thread for another day. (It comes with teardrop mirrors.....[8|])

Paul,

Hope the various financial bits line up as they should, and that the S2 purchase happens!

Selling VJ will be a wrench tho' won't it? You've had her for a long time ...

Another 12 months and you'll be looking for a turbo [:D], in the meantime flog me those mirrors [;)].

Any news Paul?

Having looked at the Club home page I see that VJ is featured rather prominently on it, is this the start of a subtle advertising campaign? [;)] :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Shows how often I look at the website! []

I'm waiting for them to look over a couple of questions I had, but the money's in the bank ready to go. This does of course mean that VJ will have to find a new home if I do get the new car. [:(]

Hi Paul

Just back from Specialised Paintwork, and and rough quote was c£600 for the rear of the cill/front edge of rear wheel arch and maybe another £200-£300 for the bottom of the front wing. Sounds a lot but I want it done by someone who knows what they're doing and in such a way as it won't need doing again next year!

This includes making new patch panels and a final dose of Waxoyl right along. They'll hope to keep the work below the stone chip line, and there's a good chance the cill will actually be OK...can't know for sure until they start hacking at it!!

Karl says they're now doing a couple of 944s every month, and have even started seeing 968s.

Booked in for next month so I'll keep you posted.

Hi Graham,

Is that per side? Sounds pretty reasonable, and as you say they do a lot of them so know how to estimate!

mine cost £200 per side. They'll need to take the wheel arch liner out to do a proper welding job. Important to do so to remove 20 years worth of mud and crud behind there, which will be the cause of the rot in the first place.

Paul:
Yes, that's just for the n/s. The o/s doesn't look too bad at the moment!

Phil:
Gulp! £200 sounds a lot better than my quote. Was that wing, or cill, or both?

I was chatting to paul @ ph sportscars today - he says they are seeing loads of late model 944's in for sills & wings at the moment - I guess the good thing is that people are repairing them rather than scrapping them

Specialised did my car last year - 2 new outer sills (genuine Porsche), minor repairs to inner sills, both front wings repaired (removed, bottoms cut off, new repair sections fabricated and welded in), new floor section on driver's side - this wasnt obvious until everything taken apart, minor repair to front of rear arch. Everything was contained to the area beneath the stone chip line. Total bill came to about £2.5k all in - dont forget that Specialised give 10% discount to those of us who are not "guests of the club" [:D].
The work was done to a very high standard. I could probably have found somewhere slightly cheaper but no complaints.
