Sad news

Traction control/ESP make for a much more relaxing drive at this time of year. My RWD daily driver is constantly flashing it's orange light to tell me I'm driving too fast for the conditions! I can never understand why people insist on turning the traction control off all the time"¦

It's a different story with a 20 year old rear driver with no driver aids (apart from very antiquated ABS!)

Sorry to hear about your mishap and glad you're ok.

real sorry to hear that. Lost my first beloved Lux on a round about at 20mph due to grease on the road.

I had a rear end shunt yesterday. The other driver remarked on how greasy the road was and I was genuinely surprised to find it was like ice . Must be a build up of diesel and leaves and mud from recent downpours.

When I lost mine the insurers offered a ridiculous amount £1200 from memory.
It turned out the assessor had used ebay for prices and hadn't appreciated the car was a post 1986 car .

I would recommend you turn down the first offers and make sure you supply the assessor with a ring binder with the car's history including some recent sales sheets of comparable cars at used car showrooms.

If you are a PCGB member you'll presumably have an agreed valuation ?

Quick update; finally settled with the insurers at £4k which is not too bad I suppose. For those interested, start tracking the salvage auction sites if you want; a club sport wheel, dash with built in satnav, immaculate navy/navy pinstripe interior & drivetrain with lost of new bits.

Will be strating the hunt in a month or two when I've built up the bundle to allow for fixes and year 1 maintenance having blown all this years budget last year...so, S2 again or bahoosted? To red or not to red?

Good to hear your deal wasn't too bad, though it far from compensates you for money spent over the years getting her as you wanted her. As for your next car.....Red? For sure. Boosted? Well ideally but not necessarily depending upon your ongoing buget because your next question will undoubtedly be 'to mod or not to mod' and usually even the very strongest willed will ultimately give in to temptation. Alternatively you could do something a bit different - v8 conversion?

hiya lawsi, glad to hear your ok but so sorry to hear of another s2 biting the dust, hope you can find a replacement, so frustrating but main thing is your ok. regards jason p

Curiously the only close shave was the one week when I had the traction control on. I was fed up that my first set of rears on my new car had lasted only 3 1/2 weeks that I decided to leave the traction control on to prevent playing with the new ones. About a week later whether it was from lack of concentration because I expected to the car to help me out or just poor circumstance I was overtaking a couple of cars up a slight hill in damp conditions changed too fast from 2nd to 3rd and before I knew it I was looking directly at the car I was overtaking. I got past him ok but in my efforts to avoid him clipped a curb as back end swung into line, destroyed two alloys and bent a lower tie rod! I was very lucky to keep the car on the road and continue. It could have been a lot worse.

I never had the traction control on again and although the wheels span often in a striaght line (mostly over bumps in the road) it never caught me out again. I don't know what effect the traction control had in contributing but I'm sure something about the way it interacted prevented me from controlling the slide in the usual way and I've never worked out why it let the wheels spin at that moment because it was usually the most nannying device known to man!

[:D] LOL! S2 it is then as I have no willpower. Talking of V8's I did find myself looking at the (red) rover engined one for sale in the Post this month and thinking about how many power upgrades are available for that lump inc. superchargers - this got silly when I started sketching up a Pro Street 944 drag racer....[]

Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..........................then with due deference to other road users PLEASE constantly slow down [8|]

I made that statement prior to the recent Winter whiteness. It is very easy to put the ESP on a Mercedes C Class, I don't drive in a manner that is dangerous to pedestrians, my passengers or other road users.

go and open your armrest [;)]

PS in front of the passenger there is a compartment for storing items nominally gloves - there are also compartments in the front for the engine and in the rear of the vehicle for storing larger items.

Modern traction control allows wheel spin but when it detects excess spin it kills engine power. On an icy hill if the TC detects excess wheelspin it cuts the power just when you dont want it to. You may think turning it off is turning it off as this allows you the feather the throttle as wheelspin stills offers some traction whereas killing the power robs the wheels of momentum and whatever grip they can get. To climb an icy hill with TC the trick is to turn it off until you get going and get some momentum and then turn it on to control the spin. Personally I`d rather feather the clutch and throttle but a lot of people assume it is designed to aid traction wheras in reality it is designed to control traction on dry/wet roads.

With BMW systems turning it off only allows a bit more latitude as it still works but at a reduced level however holding in the button for 5 secs or more turns it off completely I am reliably informed by a BMW technician. This may be the case with most systems?

What utter gollocks ! some of us just leave our cars alone and keep them unmolested and factory standard. Please stop chavving these damn cars within an inch of their lives, there cant be many left now that are left unmolested, and you must realise that all these chav mods do is devalue the '44 even more. You are dragging us all down!! do you modders still read maxpower or something?!![:D]

What would you call "chavving"? To me that is modifications that do nothing to improve the car such neon lights, different lenses, poorly fitted body kits etc.
I feel that performance upgrades such as engine, suspension and brake are fair game and tend to be invisible anyway.
I see nothing wrong with a V8 conversion and if it does de-value the car (which I doubt) it can only make standard unmolested cars more sought after and hence more valuable.

some nice un modded 944's still available, some are 'polished shoes & no soles'. But your safe & uninjured, main thing...

keep lookimg should you have to replace it, they are out there. I looked for 2 years + before stlling for the car i have..ok, its a bit of fuel & weekends here & there, but soooooooo much fun looking for the new partner [:D]

Ignore me James, I am infamous for moaning on about keeping 944s as normal as possible, I just like things nice and standard. I sometimes like to speak out to defend the poor 944 from the molesters !   no offence intended, I do use rude terms no and then !!

p.s I notice you are in Reading, how come you don't come to the region 19 events?
Sc0tty,

Bravo! - I was expecting another slanging match, but that's a good reply!

Good to have you on here. Keep on plugging the 'Keep it Original' angle.

scOtty - I will take your comment in the spirit i'm sure you intended! All I can say is that don't knock something till you've tried it! Modding is something that is either in your blood or not. I am always looking to mod everything from vacuum cleaners, to Lava lamps and i've even considered modding the SMax! Nothing in life is the best it can possibly be.

I'm assuming that my very original Black 87 944 Turbo with teledials has the stamp of Scotty approval then , now where are..... my furry dice

Must admit I can see the appeal of keeping a car as the factory intended and in the context of the world of 944's that most certainly applies to Lux's and S2's (in my book at least). Problem is those pesky Turbos really do need at least a small amount of tweaking to sort them out and that is where the all too inevitable slide into mod heaven/hell begins. [&:]

I rather like the idea of having an original condition Series 1 Lux with the old style square dash. [:)]

Can I be excused my dual port wastegate, boost gauge and air fuel ratio meter? All very discreet I promise [:(]

I have to agree with you wholeheartedly.

My Lux is in exactly the same condition as when it came out of the factory with no added parts- however I am sorely tempted to put an S2/turbo rear valance.

However, if I had a turbo I'd mod it to get the full potential out of it, but not in a PowerMax kind of way, ideally exactly like Appletonn's old 44T - oh I wish I had room on the drive when that came up for sale.

Hmmm, there was me thinking my S2 was standard (bar the Carrera 2 17" wheels, braided brake lines, Cup Mirrors and Becker HU).My two Peugeots (the 205 and 306 TD) are more standard at the moment!

In terms of a standard car I'd like to consider a 924S Le Mans :).
