Safety Camera detectors

I bought an inforad GPS unit. I also purchased the additional gps sensor which i located on top of the instrument cluster (it has a mag base) and the wires can be tucked away in the crevaces of the dash so they are hardly visible. The unit itself cost about 40 pounds and a lifetime ..yes lifetime subscription to update costs only 20 pounds. It tells you of all the GATSO , TRUVELO , SPECS and mobile camera locations via a simple audible beep which becomes a series of beeps if you are over the prescribed limit. The database also extends to areas of Europe. Its a simple device , easy to fit and use. Like all these devices , the database is the key, the speed camera detectors are in my experience both expensive and unreliable.

Well made the investment and bought the Novus Rider, as it as the options of plug-in or batteries, first impressions after the first week are excellent, both in battery and plug-in modes.
The host of extras are impressive and for someone like myself who is not a techy instructions are clear and understandable, fire up time is also impressive.
If your in the market for one of these devices and you don't want an annual fee it seems good value for money.

that' the same price as the subscription for the roadpilot for three years....might giv it a go - do you have to download the database or is it obe of these new ones tat does it for you? thing that puts me off the roadpilot forthe porsche is the very very short lead (no batteries) for the charger

I've just returned from R7 Christmas Dinner, so made a weekend of it, used the Novus Rider in both plug-in and battery mode both are very good with good alerts for not only cameras but it also tells you of schools, black spots, dangerous bends, mobile camera areas, the unit is preloaded with the sites and the updates are on the website with good instruction, what will be interesting is how long it takes to update new cameras, we've just had 4 errected locally and they don't register on the system yet.

going to give one a go - was thinking about the lack of european coverage but that seems a bit silly given the amount of time i spend driving in europe! one other thing i need to get is a new keyboard given my dodgy looking typing, sorry!

In my albeit limited experience of driving around Europe, their cameras seem to be mostly mobile anyway. So one of these location thingies might not be of so much use.

Are they not all illegal around most of Europe anyway? On the spot fines and confiscation etc.[:(] I have Pogo Alert btw, very good but expensive. Easy to update etc and very compact

nice - is that free once you have bought it and does it have battery power or is it cigarette lighter powered only?

I'm afraid not. I think it came with 6 months free and then there's a subscription charge to be able to download camera updates after that. It's only powered from the cigarette lighter and I had to get them to provide a longer cable than the supplied one so I could hide it behind, under, through etc to the aux power socket in the passenger footwell. I've had a succession of these sort of devices and got this one as a trade-in, so quite a reasonable price. Still no substitute for keeping your eyes peeled and paying attention but much better than not having anything at all! I like the average speed camera function which actually displays your current average speed while between the cameras. Still think it would be confiscated in France![:(]

thanks, looks good but i too want to get away from subscriptions.

i have ordered a novus - i spend a lot of time on the M4 and those who do know just how hard it is to keep track of the average speed cameras and changing limits. worst is the really bright spotlights they shine in your face at night so the cameras can capture your front plates.....but that's another thread....!

Hi Ian
hoping you might be able to help - got the rider today, can't get it to work on vista. they sent me a driver but i get the following error messages:

I had the same issue, as I was on the phone to the support desk the unit just started downloading, seemingly it's OK and working fine again with the new updae on, been out for a run today and its picking up some recently errected cameras

all the best

after much badgering they sent me a disk with the stuff i needed on it. don't know why it wasn't in the box to start with....great little unit though and i picked up a holder from maplin that slots in the cigarette lighter so a bit more subtle (and amazingly the novus has the right holes in it to clip into the top)
