Sat Nav Disc

Does anyone know how best to get the latest sat nav upgrade for my car, a 2006 gen1 997S.

I'm not sure what the latest disc is and don't fancy paying Porsche £400.

I have a TomTom which works well but is hardly an integrated solution.

Thanks

Stephen

Don't bother. The roads have not changed much in the last few years. If you are worried, use your Tom Tom; far better than any Porsche PCM and a 20th of the price, Even 991's still do not have full post code, disgraceful []

I updated mine recently with a disc from Navi-man (sp) on the www, workes perfectly although even though its the latest maps they are slightly out of date- as I found out in Reims a couple of weekes ago!!
The latest Porsche ones will be out of date by about 18months anyhow..[&:]

Whilst Yes the system still doesn't do full UK postcodes I find the system more than useful and as you say - much easier than a TomTom in the window.
Just don't ask Derek how good the Ferrari sat-nav is [;)]

Used the same chap Gary a few times on other cars in the family , excellent, and at 5% the cost of the manufacturers.

I agree the in car system generally gets me to within a few hundred yards of where I am going and if I get really stuck I have copilot or google on my phone which are always upto date.

Just a pity Porsche did not enhance thier system

Well, I'll save you the bother and answer anyway [:D] I have the latest Ferrari (Becker) radio in my 430. It does excellent navigation, MP3 and bluetooth telephone etc. It does full postcode. Sadly no map due to the fact that it is the usual Din slot. But I just listen to the voice.

I do agree, however, that the presentation is not as good as PCM, nor are the units in 458 or California. But at least the database is fully populated in those units. A 997/991 cannot even find some addresses that have been there for years, ie 33 Sunnyside Downley Bucks, as no street numbers are in for some roads. My 996 PCM even found it, as does Tom Tom etc.

My Garmin is perfect, but unfortunately has to be stuck on the screen. It only cost £100 though and I can take it shopping [:D].

The kit in my Q3 is wonderful, big screen at eye level (fold down), full postcode, up to date maps, bluetooth, USB, lane assist, MP3 etc etc. It can also be updated at will by memory stick for little cost. Now that Audi and Porsche are linked, I wonder if the new Macan, based on Q3/Q5 with have the brilliant Audi sat nav, or will they still use the flawed Porsche system.

Porsche's are wonderful cars, but depreciation and Sat Nav are not their best attributes []

OK, I might accept the comment that there is no place in a sports car for sat nav..... maybe. But a car costing £100K should have that technology as standard and the manufacturer should update it with every service.

And the rest, Gary. The data files on the "latest" 08.2009 disk are dated 12/2008!!

Gary

Please would you let me have the contact details (web address) for the supplier you used for an updated disc.

Thanks

Terry

For those of you with IPhone / IPad's there is a free App call GPS Angel which gives you the destination co-ordinates for any given full postcode, which in turn can be input into PCM. I find it works well. [;)]

Thanks everyone, very helpful.

Actually the roads change quite a lot as I found to my cost in France recently.

Gary, could you email me the contact for the cheap Navi man discs?

Thanks

Stephen

... and if you have a Windows Phone, same app is called "UK Postcode Locator" (and it is still free). Very handy on occasion.

Just be a little careful with "backup" dvd discs, my experience is that they have a limited life and can unexpectedly give a non recoverable error at any time. this is because they are made using a DVD writer with a higher speed and lower grade disc than those made by the original supplier. I would advise carrying a spare DVD disc to get you home if relying on the ones listed in the link. The latest map DVD is 2008 data but sold as 2009 model year.

Ive just ordered some of these from SatNavi,

It will be interesting to see if they work as i downloaded some that did not (Albeit they were free, so can harly complain).

But ive also bought the GPSAngel app for 69pence for the Ipad, as a more accurate backup.

Nick.
