Satnav

The map data is held on the hard disk in your PCM3 unit and as far as I know the only way to update (at the moment) is via official Porsche PIWIS (Porsche Centre laptop thingy)

The software update is one per vehicle and can only be used once.

This is a summary, for the MY13 update.

|Navigatio|""|Adaptation of map display according to personal requirements
|n: | |(e.g. 3D map setting/display and hide traffic messages, etc.)
| | |and display of these features as a symbol on the map.
| | |Selection of these features by "touching" a symbol on the
| | |screen.
|
| |""|When displaying the list of cities containing cities with
| | | |identical names, the "Details" button can be used to show an
| | |additional map with more information. This makes it easier to
| | |select the destination you want.
|
| |""|Additional display of set route options (toll, motorway,
etc.)|
| | |as symbols in the Navigation main menu.
| |""|When the detour query function is activated, a traffic
message|
| | |is displayed (approx. 10 minutes before reaching a traffic
| | |jam). You can then choose to "Detour"/"Ignore" the traffic
jam|
| | |or request further "Details".

| | |mobile phone does not support the SIM Access Profile (similar
| | |to SIM card inserted in PCM). Vehicle does not have to be
| | |re-coded in the workshop.

|Voice |""|Increased recognition rate due to additional street queries.

|
|audio | |for any text);
|interface| |

|New music search, starting from the track that is currently
| | |playing.

Although not mentioned above, I believe it also updates to 7 digit postal codes. The cost of the update is £364.23 inc VAT plus the cost of 45 minutes labour.[:)]

I didn't think the 7 digit post code update is available yet for early delivery 991. As for 997 there will never be one!

Hi Geoff,

I can only reproduce the information received from Reading in response to the software upgrade enquiry I made for my 2011 Turbo 'S'

"Dear Mr White

Thank you for your email.

I have spoken again with our technical department and they have confirmed
the 7 digit postcode entry should be a by-product of the latest map update.

The technical department have explained the update has not been given to us
as an update to the postcode entry, but what they have found is when we
have updated cars PCM's the new map data contains the 7 digit postcode
entry function.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely

My Porsche Centre have been in contact with the Reading technicians and have confirmed independently the PCM upgrade now accepts 7 digit postcodes, so on this basis I have ordered one.

I will report back to confirm this once the work has been completed.

Clive.

Clive, when you say you have "ordered" one presumably this is just a software update that the PC should have anyway? Or do they need some kind of activation code from Porsche?

I have no first hand knowledge of this update yet.

It appears the hard disk has to be accessed by the PIWIS tester and then updated via a supplied DVD that is individual and only usable once and then discarded. [8|]

Far be it from me to defend manufacturers' sat nav. prices, as I can never figure how they manage to charge so much, when nowadays portable units are so cheap.

However, I suppose it would be argued all the work goes into writing the system software, not the cost of materials.

Clive.

Interesting post...I had asked Porsche (email via website) if such an upgrade was available, specifically asking for 7 digit postcode and was eventually directed to my local OPC who said the upgrade was not available , I asked again a month or so again and they said the situation had not changed. From Lancerlot's very useful info above however it would appear that this feature is now available (maybe more as a by-product of a general software update rather than one specifically designed to add satnav functionality) so will watch this post with interest.

It is quite a steep price for a software upgrade but it looks like there are some other updates and tweaks in there too so will go for it I think - now if only it made BT-AUX available on PCM3 but I read somewhere that this is a hardware limitation on the 997.2 as much as a software one.

As regards the 997 PCM 3 2013 upgrade, I can now confirm this does allow 7 digit postal codes to be used and is a by-product of this latest software.

The kit comprises 2 DVD's and a dedicated serial number, usable only once. 45 minutes has been allowed for this upgrade work that also requires the use of Porsche's PWSIS decoder.

The retail price is as posted earlier. PCGB members should be able to obtain a discount from their Centre.

Clive

So that is £364.23 inc VAT plus the cost of 45 minutes labour, which will be another £100 approx! less say 10% club discount. Call it £420 all in. That works out about the same as two top end Garmin/Tomtom with lifetime mapping support. I think we need a group buy deal.

Thanks for the update Lancerlot, I will now get a quote from my local OPC I (East London BTW), do you think just asking for "MY2013 update" would do the trick or was there a part number on your invoice, just to make sure before I shell out 420 odd quid!

PCM Sat Nav on my Boxster 981 is a very poor cousin to what is in my Audi Q3. Examples:

1. Database very poorly populated and many streets don't have house numbers.
2. There is no indication on the screen which station is broadcasting a traffic warning, unlike Audi. Hence you have to listen to it just in case it is in your area.
3. I have yet to discover how to put a waypoint in as a destination using the map.
4. The Satellite controlled time does not change automatically to BST. It has to be manually.

As they are the same company, you would think that Porsche/Audi use the same basic Sat Nav equipment/software and just vary the presentation.

But at least at long last I now have full post code [:D]

Don't you touch the map where you want to go, choose "options" from the tab at the top and then "start route guidance"? Works for me on my ancient 2010 PCM3![:)]
