Hi all, I'm thinking of getting back into porsche ownership via a 964 c4. I've arranged to look at a car this weekend which has been based in Scotland all it's life. Just wondering if there is anything in particular to look out for given our climatic environment? Comments very much appreciated. Ta

Hi
Having had my 964 for close on 10 years and doing all the work on it myself I have seen most issues!!
What is the mileage on the car?
I would be looking in the history for clutch/flywheel change
Engine rebuild (dependant on miles)
Oil leaks...forget all 964 leak story.. Mine is 100% dry so it is achievable!!
Front wishbone bushes wear and are costly/time consuming to fix even if using polyurethane bushes
Brakes suffer from plate lift so inspect around where the pads fit into the calliper to see if the plates have corrosion underneath. This is a pain to fix as its difficult to undo the screws!! I know I did mine and then decided I wanted big reds instead!!
Check scuttle panel by wipers and where the screen meets. Also where scuttle meets front wings as this tends to corrode
When did the suspension get upgraded/changed...rear shocks/springs sag causing a high stance at the front.
Are the wheels genuine
Condition of interior...this cost me a fortune to sort on mine!!
Oil pressure when HOT at idle what is the reading..does it go to max when revved
Air con does it work??
Engine tin rusts and is expensive...I changed all mine and it's really not cheap
Does it have the identification sticker under front bonnet..(paper sticker on underside)
All numbers match with log book
Recent service or prove of oil changes..receipts etc.
Rust can be an issue so check for paint bubbles rear arch seals ( where bumper meets rear wing).sills, scuttle, around rear window etc
If the owner will let you remove the rear plastic engine cover the look at all oil pipes for corrosion/leaks
Don't let heart rule your head!! I have spent thousands on mine and have bills totalling 20k+ spent over the last 10years.
It depends on how good you want it to be. I am a perfectionist and want the car as best as it can be! And no it's not for sale!! Lol

Thanks for the feedback, the car in question is as per link:

I have no idea what kind of condition the body is other than the owner telling me that there is a couple os stone chips. Your point about the interior does have me thinking having looked at the images again.....

I owned a 964 C2 for a few years. It was essentially a good car, but the previous owner had skimped on the maintenance, and playing catch-up cost me a small fortune. If nothing else this owner seems to have spent money on the car which is a good sign, but be aware that 964's can eat money!
Have never owned a 964 but i know a few people who know them inside out and will give you advise .I would get it inspected by a specialist and not necessary by the company who have done all the work .
Most on here know the specialist in Scotland post up who it is . Or we can point you in the direction of a good one .
By your own admission the inside looks a bit lived in.
If in doubt walk away .I have been in the club for years and the owner and car do come to mind ,but i do not know all East coast owners to be fair .

It looks ok and for the price it's not bad.
6k does not get you an awful lot done in 964 terms! A major service is close on 1k if you send it to a dealer...or slightly cheaper at a specialist. My concern on this one would be the interior...my seat covers were about 2.5k + new carpet as the linen one looks dirty. So budget on 3k to sort it excluding door trims, console, handbrake, rear shelf etc...trust me the list goes on and on! I had all mine done and If I remember I didn't get change from 4k 6 years ago! And I fitted mine myself.
Wheels are from 993 so I would want the cup 1 wheels at around a grand for a good genuine set with tyres.
The front suspension looks a bit high so I would want to check the what dampers were replaced and if the coil springs were done at the same time. Also history of 4 wheel alignment
It's an early one so will probably have the aluminium intakes....but the engine maybe a later one with the sealing gaskets between the head and cylinders which is a good thing.
All in all it looks ok at the money from the photos but I think to bring it up to scratch will take a fair amount of cash.
It really depends on what you want from it to be honest... I like to have my 964 immaculate and am prepaired to spend cash on it as hopefully I will never sell it. If you are not too bothered about interior, wheels etc then it's probably ok considering the spend already done. As some of the issues were highlighted in my previous post.
Go take a look it may well be what your after...it's reasonably priced judging by photos...
Just be careful and if unsure get an inspection done or find someone who knows 964's
As they can turn into money pits and I should know!!!
Good luck let us know how you get on

Why would anyone use a photo of a car to sell it taken outside "car-o-liner" ... a place that straightens accident damged cars on a jig (unless he works there of course) Enough to set my alarm bells ringing anyway. Hideous steering wheel too.
Well, I looked at it tonight. Unfortunately it's not for me, it's been kept outside for quite some time and hence with has all the associated problems. The search goes on. Thanks all for the help and if anyone knows of any descent cars looking for a new home please drop me a line.

Always disappointing when a car is not as good as you had hoped for, but walking away is the right thing to do. There will always be others!
The 944 Turbo is a car I look after for the owner. Just had a full glass out respray at over 3 grand, the picture of it outside is in front of the bodyshop car park before it was picked up. The steering wheel is hideous but he has the original, personal taste and all that! I also know of a 944 Turbo Cab up for sale that I have just recomissioned for the owner, nice car with low miles. Also another turbo up for sale in Einburgh with a nice spec and excellent body that I look after too.
I am on 07515 899 500 if you want to discuss any of them or for a chat

I had a look at another 964 today and once again left disapointed. I just wish that when you call someone and ask "Is there any corrosion present?" they give you an honest answer![8|] Maybe I just kidding myself on by looking at old cars?
I did semi think of a 3.4 996 for a second but then remembered spending most on my time worrying about engine going bang when I own the boxster.
A good 944/968 maybe an option but am I right in saying that getting one with an LSD is near impossible?

Now you're talking! I also owned a 968 Coupe and considered it a far superior drivers car to the 964. Mention 968's and of course everyone immediately starts talking about the Club Sport. Undeniably a good car, but it means the regular Coupe gets overlooked which makes it one of the most under-rated cars Porsche ever built. []
