They werent an option. The facelifted door handles carried the Porsche script from 1985.2 (MY86) until the 1989 model year cars were introduced in September 1988.
The reason that theyre mixed and matched on many cars is due to the original handles failing, which was common. Its only recently that repair parts have become available: until then you had to take what you could get from your local Porsche breaker...
