Scumrun

I think it was Mas who mentioned this run at the Essex regional meet and it got me thinking what a good idea! The Scumrun (previously known as Scumball 3000) is a alternative version of the famous Gumball 3000.

Apparently to enter you are only allowed to spend up to £500 on an original car (which can then modify and alter as you wish) which will then be driven by you and your co-driver accross Europe, destinations for teams to drive to are only given in the morning of each day and total approx 3000 miles over 4 days.

Entry is about £225 per person which includes the ferry crossings and campsites on the way, you also need to raise at least £500 for charity which is always a British childrens charity.

Perhaps an entry with a 924 is possible for 2011?[:D]

RagTheRing anyone?

You're right Ed it was me who said I'd seriously like to do it next year. The thing is none of my friends are crazy enough to do it with me, its not exactly your average blokes dream holiday is it [;)] , pretty close to mine though i have to say. I do have one person in mind who still 'may' but despite what he says I don't believe his missus will give him a pass out for several days. Personally I would like to do the scum run in something a little more spacious than a 924 / 944 and do have something suitably wacky in mind :p

Im fortunate enough to have free reign for any trips ( if im good) so I seriously do hope to go next year if nothing changes [:D]

Ive entered the Scumball3000 twice: in 2007 and 2006. In 2009 Ed sold my place to someone else so I missed it, which caused me to look father afield. Having looked I realised that Chris & Eds prices were FAR too expensive. The entry fee includes camping, but only because in 2007 the sites were poor and few people paid up! The ferry cost is on top and now they there not crossing from Dover to Calais its expensive.

My avatar shows me making friends with Stuttgart's finest. James and I were the first car out of the surrounded campsite that morning...

If anyone has any questions then I would be happy to answer them.

Agreed the 924 isnt probably the best suited, but how much room do you need? Its just 4 days and there'll be enough room for a tent, also it would provide continuity as Porsche enthusiasts[;)] and I bet there arent many other porkers on the run...

What car did you have in mind?

Edd

Having thought about that it was 2007 in a Porsche 944 and 2008 in a Skoda Felicia. 2006 was the first year and it was far smaller. There was another 944 in 2007 and a couple of 924s; which were all absolutely hanging. One 924 was squashed by ze Germans and the other 944 made it home to be sold on eBay. It blew up on the fellow who bought it, who James and I met the following year.

It took over an hour of my anal and obsessive-compulsive packing to get everything into the 944 in 2007, so that we could close the hatch. [:D]

Simon , I remember you telling me of your exploits before but Im sure you have more to tell ! Your having done it in a 944 was a definate plus for me. When I mentioned it at the PCGB meet we didnt talk much about it TBH I wasnt sure it would interest anyone.

Thinking ahead a bit here , if we could get several porsche to go the if one blew up the occupants wouldnt have to walk home ! , they could just be crippled in the back of
another 944 lol

I have looked around and posted before that scumrun is far from the only event of this type now. Im amazed how many of these there are but I suppose its business !

I would be interested in any recomendations as to which 'run' might be good/bad etc but ill wager a few of them are very poor copies ?

A few include

Bangers and trash Scumrun wackyrally mila miglia ramshackle rally

There is obviously money in these rallies lol

Regards Mas

I'm going with a black 86 944 that i picked up last year as a cat C with a broken wishbone and strut. All fixed, polished and looking forward to the VIC check ready for the run in 2011.

I have not got a co driver yet so if anybody is interested then let me know

'Bonkers to Budapest' caught my eye last year, after I misplaced my Scumball place (the Scally Rally events to the Arctic Circle and North Africa look good too, but hotels REALLY jack the price up). I was surprised to see how much cheaper virtually every other event was: when James and I paid £150 each in 2007 there were other more established rallies charging £75 per car and two drivers. Even now most seem to be about half the price.

If I had the money available then Id probably go with Ed & Chris though, despite my complaining: I know so many of the other entrants after all.

2007 - Team 69: At the docks waiting all night to load: this doesnt happen now.

Running the gauntlet: the first five cars out had a very difficult time, which wasnt shown on the DVD

I take it its your 944 on this Scumrun video Simon! http://www.scumrun.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4&Itemid=5

Oh dear. Yes it is and it was me driving too [:(]. I knew better but the director asked me to try: I hoped that I could get up enough momentum on the loose to carry it around on the tarmac. It carried on for a few degrees and then hooked-up - shooting me into the verge. You cant imagine how nervous I was when the DVD came out, after some of the things that had been filmed. I still havent seen the 'adult' version, so if anyone has it and has seen me: please keep quiet!

Oddly enough, an old colleague of mine did it in 2007 (I think) in a white Nissan Silvia Turbo. From what I've heard it's good fun, certainly something I'd consider if it happened again or something of a similar nature.

Doing Scallyrally's Mille Miglia myself this year the whole point of getting the 944 always fancied blasting around Italy in a nice classic and the other rally I was interested in was the Arctic which will probable be next years rally.

Done>

2009 - Coyote Rally £200 Subaru legacy estate Prague, Amsterdam, Munich and Paris. (Young lads organising it bit amateur hour really)

2008 Road 2 Rimini - BMW 318 £100 Scallyrally and to be honest they were the best organised and easiest to get along with than all the other rallies i've been on.

2006 CRX2006 with street safari in an Audi 80 sport £60 all the way to Prague and back.( most miserable bunch of muppets i've ever had the chance to meet really should do something else)

My advice is get a diesel big enough for four even if you have 2-3 in your team the amount of bags, beer, crisps and pop that gets chucked in seriously would get on your wick in a little car, and the fuel bills are a fair bit as your pretty much doing 80-90mph on the motorways for hours on end. Really a lash up for a long weekend with some really nice driving roads chucked in.
Done the Stelvio twice now Dolomites once and plenty of other passes that their names slip me by. Hotels can be expensive and if tied in with the rally can be a rip off(Street Safari) so the internet comes in very handy when checking prices, camping for me is just a no no after 6-10 hours of driving the last thing I want is a cold shower and crap bed. Sponsorship is pretty easy and can help with the car but all the other costs are down to yourself beer, food hotels etc.. others you have to pay fuel, tolls entry fee's.

If you need any help or advice just let us know.[;)]
Scally rally still have places left too entry was £199 but I got a discount for doing there rally in the past, which goes to show they have people returning every year.

Is there enough interest to get a group of Porsche folk enterign the rally next year ? because it sounds like there could be.

The only thing is , it is a long way off and people will change their minds or circumstances I suppose. I think though that entries normally open on 1st of May so it would be good to know for sure if anyone is going to enter.
If there are a few Porsche up for it , I'll be happy to buy a Porsche for the purpose , if not and its just me and a mate I'll be going with my especially purchased reliable and comfortable Volvo turbo [:D]

Got to say next years run will more than likely be the Arctic in an old diesel shitter but maybe a run to the Nurburgring or somewhere could be sorted?
Other than that would probably run the 944 again in something like scumball/scumrun whatever it's called.

To be honest the RagTheRing event does seem very tempting, especially considering there is no limit on value of car (you can take anything). They basically leave on the Saturday, arrive at the ring Saturday afternoon, then Sunday is free to run around the ring coming back monday morning. Short but sufficient.

Could be good if we get a few 944's in attendance? Cost is £200 for car and driver, £100 for each extra passenger, that includes ferry, and campsite but not ring entrance (what is the cost nowdays?).

I'm up for it!

I'd love to do the scumrun but I wouldn't like to commit to anything at the moment without looking into it a bit further. It does sound like a lot of fun though and the ability to wield spanners might come in handy.

I did the ramshackle rally with 3 mates last year to Krakow, had a really good time! It was well organised and stopped in some really nice places. We did it in a £140 Ford Mondeo done up like the days of thunder city chevrolet NASCAR!

there are some pictures on here - http://daysofthunder.ramshackleteams.com/

http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=465111&mpage=1&key=ramshackle%2Crally&#465111

If your thinking of doing one do it!

ive done the following street safari events

staples to naples 2006, 2007, 2008
czech wrecks 2009

we used an orion for the first, and after that mondeo's last year we took a 2L mondeo and a renault espace, make sure you get on well with the people you go with because sitting for days on end in cars will test any relationship! my brother even punched his friend who was designated driver on a night out! i will dig out some pics of our fantastic cars
