Semi or fully synthetic oil..which one?

It's not a part of the car I've ever taken apart but doesn't the oil cooler have a thermostat? Could be wrong but adding one to your proposed second cooler could do the job.

I'm not aware of an oil thermostat. I've replaced many water thermostats on various cars i've had but never an oil thermostat. Maybe that's why you need a thicker oil for heavy track use as there is no closed temperature control loop in the oil system. It just allows the oil to get hotter and hotter once your cooling system has maxed out.

A thermostat would help avoid overcooling by acting as the 'switchable valve' you describe in your previous post, according to PET the part no. for the oil thermostat is 951.107.155.00.

Assuming I'm using PET correctly that should mean you could go nuts with the number or size of oil coolers & it should still be able to avoid overcooling [;)]

I believe Riverside is right. There is an oil thermostat, which is why those people who have fitted larger Mocal oil coolers do not run arond with oil that's too cold in normal conditions. The cooler does not come in to effect until the thermostat opens.

For those of you that are contemplating fitting a oil temp gauge,, Where are you going to get the temp sender from.???
Are you going to get a modded sump plug.?? OR something else...

Ahhaaaaaa..........brilliant. Where is it? (too lazy to look[8|]) as I`m gonna change it as a precaution. Great engineering a syou can uprate the cooler without compromising the oil temp.

If thats the case then a temp gauge can be drilled into the sump plug or the turbo return pipe banjo (although the second option might give an artificially high reading for the general oil temperature) I`ll have a look at my spare sump and it may be possible to tap the sump or hole it with sealing washers and nuts each side. Failing that the logical place is an in line one to the cooler if its betwen the engine and the `stat.

I havn't thought where to tap into the system to fit the sender. A modified dip stick with a thermocouple at the end would be an ideal thing. You could attach a plug at the end for when you want to remove the dip stick. This would negate the need to cut into any oil lines and make fitting it a doddle.

All the one's that I've seen (Rennlist and our own Mr Cannell) have one on the sump plug.

How did Rick stop the oil coming out while tapping the plug [8|] .....................must have had to lay the car on its nearside [&:] [:)]
