Service at an indy or not?

Yes, five pulleys to be changed. I priced it all up when I had mine done (just before Christmas) and got prices from Bert at Berlyn Services. However, my indie didn't want to use non-genuine pulleys so insisted on using Porsche parts, which worked out about twice as much! Bert said that his pulleys were exactly the same, just in different boxes, and I have no reason to disbelieve him.

My indie was happy to use aftermarket belts tho', so I saved there (a packet, as it turns out.)

Prices I got were as follows:

Berlyn Porsche
Cam Belt 16 86.26
Balance Belt 27 73.20
Balance belt tensioner 26 48.29
Balance idler 22 42.54
Cam tensioner wheel 28 61.71
Cam idler 1 21 32.89
Cam idler 2 17 38.89

The prices you have are pretty much those as from Berlyn.

ETA: My indie (I'm using that phrase a fair bit, aren't it?) said that he won't change the belts without changing the pulleys at the same time. As an insurance policy, I guess it makes sense, but with such regular changing I'd certainly be buying the Berlyn ones for preference. (If a pulley seizes then it is likely to jam the belt sooner or later, or wear through it, in which case it's curtains to the engine.) You can get an idea of how far gone a pulley is by spinning it; mine had some very musical bearings so changing them was a good idea. The front end of the engine was noticably quieter when the job was done ...

Justin, in your locale I would recommend Olli at www.rpmporsche.co.uk

He is ex JZM, has labour rates of only £38 and has plenty of 944 experience. Menu prices are £211 for a 12k and £270 for the belts (inclusive of VAT)

I'd back that up - he did my belts, rollers etc. last year.

When I had the belt and a full service, inc. brake pads, 911 Mobile was £400 all in three years ago.

I would get the belts replaced but to save money do the service yourself and keep reciepts.I think that the belts replaced will certainly be a bargaining tool.

Sorry if this is going over much repeated ground, but can anyone suggest a reasonably priced, and good, indy within 40 miles or so of East Grinstead, Sussex.

My only reservation with flexis would be their longevity when exposed to the moisture and winter salt over time. The only time i've seen flexible fuel hoses used, apart from in the engine bay, is on rally cars

Nowt wrong with flex fuel pipes except that they are more prone to damage (and heat) so need to be sited well and if used on vertical or under floor surfaces will require more support. All the kit car/Ultima brigade use em as have I in the past [;)] If you are making a track special they are easier to adapt/reroute although I would go the rigid route where practical.

Belts AND rollers done for £249? That IS a bargain! I paid £700 for the same job (and a rear wheel bearing) just before Christmas ... where was this bargain to be had?

Sorry Zago. What I meant was the cost of purchasing and having sixteen shiny new valves fitted after having had all the bent ones removed from the cylinder-head and having had all the cracked valve guides repaired.

Ah, but then you weren't replying to me but replying to my reply to a reply from someone else.
