Where are you Lee?
I bought a 'cheap' C4 964 Targa, knowing it needed some TLC and wanting it done to my own standards (clean history all the same - just unloved and tatty really and I did some hard bargaining). Even at that it's 'only' cost me about £4k in a year (practically resprayed and some VERY expensive tyres included) which was slightly below what I had allowed. Though I do confess to a panic when it sprayed oil everywhere and I thought I'd blown something major - I was actually happy to pay a hundred quid for an oil pipe! Currently about 95% towards where I want to be and I haven't regretted any of it.
Turning up at a clients in it is fine - either turn up in a new mondeo clone or something quirky with character. The 964 is a recognised classic and my clients view it as just that - rather than a 'flash git' motor.
Having said that my Capri is more popular with clients (I swear!), folk have come out to the carpark for a look and asked to be taken for a spin. It used to drive an old audi driving (ex)business partner of mine up the wall.
I like old cars and I'm prepared to spend some money for character but I do have a sensible car too so I suppose I'm an umarried guidance counsellor really on the issue of a 964 as a main workhorse but I would say go for it.
