short shift gear shifts.

I know you guys are going to help me here as you have with a number of things I tried to do by myself and suffered. I've taken on board everything I've been told and will use that info to make my 944 the perfect one for me.

This query, I wanted a shorter travel on my gearlever so bought a short shift from Porscheshop which Bob Watson fitted whilst he had my car. I did the 20 miles home and it snapped clean at the linkage (which resulted in my mown down garden wall, don't ask how). No faith in that product now but still want the shorter travel. What experience does anybody have and which is the best. I had a Honda S2000 as a co car and that shift was brilliant, hardly any movement other than the flexing of the wrist and felt so well engineered.

Any suggestions please ?

(my driver's Sparco seat is being trimmed in linen leather with cloth insert today, can't wait to get it back, maybe centre console next, then door trims, then maybe dash, quoted silly prices, so cheap, don't go to a marque specialist !)
 
I didn't ever fit the quickshift I bought and sold it to someone else so I can't help specifically, except to say Porscheshop aren't the highest regarded on here.

The real reason to post though is that I really, really, really want to see a pic or two of the retrimmed seat if you can do that.
 
Oooh, yes, that is something i'd love to do - get the interior trimmed with leather.

The short shift levers are not the proper way to do this. The proper short shift kits replace the mechanism on the transaxel. However the only person I know who has tried one of these didn't like it and reverted back to a brand new standard mechanism. The problem with our gearboxes is that the shifts are pretty knarly - especially 1st to 2nd when cold and a short shift just amplifies the problem. It seems you need that leverage and the plastic bushes to enable you to get a decent shift without feeling life you've had a gym workout.

You should be able to take the slop out of the gearchange though by replacing a the socket the bottom of the lever sits into (going off a description here as i've not seen it myself). Jon Mitchell used to make a replacement item for this which is apparently a key area that wears and introduces slop.
 
Fen, I will post a pic as soon as I can. I had taken the full cover off the electris sports seat hoping they could use something of it so it matched the passenger seat but the leather was too far gone.

Mine was a transaxle one, and it had 2 options for throw reduction in each plane. I wish I could remember where it came from and/or who I sold it to...

Really looking forward to seeing the seat.
 
Actually there have been a few of us that have fitted the short shift kits.
The Best one is as has been said, The transaxle version.
I had one on my S2.. It was just FABULOUS. + ive got a similar version on my 968 now...Everybody that drove my car ,ALL said it was great + wanted one...
PJS917 has one on his S2, + Wigeon Incogneto has one fitted to his S2..
All of which are happy with them.
They came from the USA...Try USA e-bay...
Im sure one of the others will be along soon, as mine was fitted around 2 years ago, + ive since forgotten the maker..
It might be "Speed 6" Or something like that...

It is pretty unpleasant when the oil is cold, particularly 1st to 2nd, but after that it is a nice set up.

IIRC Tony just got a new standard rear linkage and suggested this was nice as it has the rubber damper but not the slop of the old deteriorated damper.

My rear linkage has let me down once as the grub screw which locates it onto the gearbox shaft came loose. RAC man fixed it but it does leave you with the fear that it may happen again.

As everyone said above, John Mitchell's refurbished gearsticks are excellent, removing all play at the front end of the system. Had one on my last 944.

On my current car though, the previous owner made his own short shift setup. Both shortening the gearstick and replacing the rear linkages with custom fabricated parts. He was a very competent mechanic who ran his own small garage, and the shift on my car is excellent.
 
Do you have any contact details for him? Do you think he would be willing to make any more? It would seem there might be a market for them.

Yes new, standard front 'stick and cup' and the rear assembly and most of the slop had gone. there was still a little slack as the bit that attaches to the front stick had worn as well, Jons front kit removes this, IIRC by using a larger pin and drilling through the 'socket tube'. I find alll the short shift kits too notchy and short [;)] so would go standard rear improved front if doing it again - and I probably will after, close to another 100k since the last one (at around 100k) it is starting to slop again.

Don't think it's likely, he's moved on to old Lotuses now.
