Short Shift

patch

New member
Dear All,
Any views on the value of putting a short-shifter into an early 996? Waste of time perhaps?
Happy New Year.
Des.

I fitted one to my 996. The standard shift is very smooth but too long for my tastes. The short shift kits are quite agressive but do shift much quicker. They feel notchy to begin with but you soon get to use to it and in my opinion makes the car much more fun to drive fast!

Get it from porscheshop or somewhere similiar, the OEM one is made by B&M and most Porsche independent sell them. I fitted mine myself, took an hour off me being very careful.

Hi,

I posted same question on pistonheads but most people advised against it so I am now having second thoughts

I had it fitted to my 996 turbo - very nice & precise. Notchy and stiff when cold though. Glad I fiited it.

Fitted one that I bought on Ebay and it was so bad, made the change very notchie and I had to buy a new cage to refit the old gear lever. If you are going to do it ensure that you buy a proper shift kit and don't cut corners where it counts. Fitting is easy but I would not do it. See if you can try a car with it fitted you may or may not like it.... Good luck!

I've been tempted by an aftermarket short shift kit but have been put off by the number of people talking about notchy changes. Several people seem to have gone back to stock.

However, several guys on rennlist have gone for the stock 997 shifter in their 996's and seem to be very happy with it. Apparently results in about 15% shorter shift + much smoother change as the new shift assembly has been redesigned.

I haven't got round to getting a price yet, but I'm very tempted as it looks like the perfect compromise. Any of you guys done this?

I fitted one of the Ebay short shifts to my last Boxster and I've just bought one for my new car. I've seen the B&M short shift and pictures of the Porsche version and apart from colour you cannot tell any difference from the Ebay ones!
If you have a notchy gear change to start of with though it will make things worse.

i had the OE porsche short shift fitted to my box-s (986).

when i was looking i found there were 2 available: the B&M one and the Porsche one. Apparently the B&M unit requires some cutting of the original components, so cannot be completely "reversed". The OE Porsche one can be removed and returned to standard (assuming you keep the original parts of course).

Re notchiness: i found the 986 standard shift to be quite notchy. the short-shift is marginally more notchy but the reduction in throw well worth it. just a personal view

I would imagine you have to cut out the bushes to install the OEM shortshift. Unless it comes already fitted in the cage?

Fitted one yesterday, got it from e-bay/EMB racing. Very nice & precise a big improvment. No problems so far.

I remember from the brochures at the time that the gt2 has a 20% shorter throw. I'd have thought that'd be a good way to go. I'm sure you could get the original part.

If you are set on installing the factory kit the 997 short shift kit is a simpler and reversible install and fits into the 996. The 997 kit comes complete with housing and adjustment bracket whereas the 996 kit is shifter and bushes and requires the destruction of the original bushes.

Part number for the 997 kit is 997 424 983 00 - Should be around £256 after club discount.

The 996 kit number is 996 424 983 00 (Now unavailable) and superseded by the 997 part was £385.

I have been looking on 'Design 911 UK' and they have three, ranging from £138-£266.
yes, the GT2 has 20% reduction but, is 20% too little and 40% too much?

I fitted the standard 997 gear shift into my 996 - shortens the travel by 15 % - feels great & the effort increase is acceptable even with cold car in winter.

Standard 997 gearshift was ~ £115 2 yrs ago via local OPC inc Porsche Club discount & is also reversible mod as comes as complete kit.
Have you considered the increased force required to change gear for the more extreme travel reductions - whatever travel reduction you go for is also the force increase.

Regards & happy hunting.

I will say they 986/996 SS kit can be heavy whereas the 987/997 SS kit is much smoother/lighter. I have installed and currently use both on our cars, very different feel.
