Short shifter

The new part needed quite a bit of re-working the hole in the main shaft was drilled in the wrong place and the main connector was very tightly milled, but not well finished and needed de-burring, once this re-working was done it went back together fairly easily.

I Thought the hole was in the correct place on my linkage shaft but found the actual shaft to be slightly too long, once i took the tip off it fitted well into the gear stick rod and the hole lined up perfectly... I guess if these are mass
manufactured they might be slightly different in places ?[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

The linkage shaft on the one I fitted is the same length as the old one, but the new one had a machined collar that stopped is from going to far down the shaft. The hole drilled in the new piece was about a 1cm short of its required position, hence the re-drill.

I agree with Charles Y , it does look a good piece of kit, until you fit it. It is not the best engineered or made out of the best materials, however it is cheap and it apears to do the job, with a little re-working.

Got it installed at last yesterday and it took the guys in RPM 2 hours to do it. Most of the time spent was to remove the old one which was very hard. They had to remove the exhaust and use a shoulder gun to heat up the old shifter with lots of hammering involved. Putting the new one in is easier.

Anyway, the end result is a very rewarding experience. It felt a bit stiff in the beginning in the 1st hour of driving but felt so smooth already when driving this morning. The shifting time is definitely reduced where the distance travel to each gear is a lot shorter now . Imagine it about an inch (distance wise) to shift from neutral to 1st. Also, the gear lever now feels more solid with less vibration.

A mod highly recommend.

That sounds like a great Mod - is this "shoulder gun" a new special porsche tool I havnt heard of?

That sounds great, I'm trying to get my current sloppy shift (linkage worn out) to feel as much like my MX-5's shift as possible i.e. rifle bolt.

Has anybody got any experience of the Schnell short shift kit as it seems to be keenly priced in various shops in the US?

Cant comment on the Schnell short shift kit but i think the kit mentioned on this original post was a steel at 55 quid delivered from the states...[:)]

Just to update this thread, I bought the cheap kit as discussed (the Weltmeister) and upon reading this thread and advice elsewhere I decided to let my specialist do the fitting.

The end result was that my car came back with the same linkage as it went into the garage with!

First, the shaft needed cutting on the kit for it to fit so that was done. But then it was found that the joint on the kit was way too tight and full of rust!

My indy did his best to free off the joint but when fitted it was too stiff to be able to select any gears i.e. the original had to go back on.

On the plus side, all of the rusty bolts etc that were encountered have now been dealt with (the time consuming bit) but on the minus side I still have a baggy gearchange and I'm out of pocket. I have tried to contact the seller to see if he will offer any courtesy but so far haven't had a reply (I'm not surprised, especially as it was a transatlantic transaction).

So if the seller doesn't respond, it looks like I'll be trying another kit. Maybe the Schnell one next!

Ahh I didn't realise that was one of yours, very nice!! Suffice to say I'm a bit jealous! When Mike said the owner had an S2 and a 968 Cab too I did wonder.

I often pass what I assume is your Cab sitting for sale - I'm surprised it's still on the market as it's certainly an eye catcher.

Another short shift update: The seller responded and has said that if I return the original he's happy to send me another one! It's worth a try and good of him considering I bought it some time ago now, and I'm in the UK.

Matt.
Yes thats my cab for sale. Thanks for the nice coments about it..
Im VERY suprised its still FOR SALE......
Come on chaps. There must be somebody who want a GOOD 968 cabrio.?????

Another update.

I decided sending the faulty short shift kit back wasn't worth it due to postage costs etc but before I bought an alternative kit I was casually playing with the faulty one to see if I could figure out what was wrong.

Well, I realised it was only truly stiff in one direction so thought the ball joint must be slightly out of shape.

I stuck it in a vice, squashed it, and hey presto it worked. One fully free and working short shift kit.

I installed it yesterday in the driveway with just the back wheel off the car. It took a couple of hours but that was mainly due to the old linkage being a pig to get off (top 13mm bolt was diffcult to get a purchase on as it was floating around and I couldn't see it very easily, dropping the exhaust off would have made it a little easier).

The difference is astounding. Definitely the best £45 I've spent on the car so far, or at least the £45 that has made the most noticeable difference.

All of the gears are easy to select, and working it up and down the box is now a pleasure.

could someone post a pic here or perhaps the next times someone tackles.

would be nice to see what bits have been altered to get round the fitting difficulties experienced.

cheers
Paul

Matt.
The SSK kit might have cost you £45 ,,, BUT how much did you charged , for MB to try + fit your kit.?????[;)][;)][;)]

Oh and my cab is STILL for sale. And it has a 968 short shift kit fitted....[:D][:D][:D][:D]

Yeah, the money to MB wasn't money well spent in this case - nothing to do with him of course, it was entirely the kit's fault (and mine for not checking it).

Although, the old kit may not have been so easy to get off had he not had it off once before and various other seized bolts on the exhaust etc have been replaced too.

I think it'll teach me not to be so afraid of tackling these things in future though, and try it myself first!!
