Silly speccing question

Just carpet as standard, different people like different options but one that is low cost and very useful I've found is the auto dimming mirrors with rain sensor ( auto wipers ) very useful considering the number of SUV's and lorries on the roads they really should be in the standard spec in my view along with the upgraded headlights.

 
They come with just carpet as Kevan says and I opted for the basic overmats. Even after 8 months use mine are looking slightly worn but given replacements are only about £75 I will probably replace next spring.

 
Hi guys,

I'm on the configurator most days trying to decide on the final spec of the 718 Cayman I'm going to order when it's launched (really struggling with colour).

But one thing I keep wondering about are the floor mats. Does the car come with mats as standard and these can be upgraded to personalised floor mats with leather edging (or the carbon floor mats), or does it come with just the carpet and you have to order the mats separately?

Porsche floor mats came as standard with my Cayman S. Maybe they were standard on the 981 or maybe just on the "S" model.

 
Hi I've got a new 718 Cayman S on order and was shown the mats that come with the vehicle, they are a removable carpet held in place with a type of plastic poppets if that helps John.

 
I also have a new 718 Cayman S PDK on order. Floor mats are supplied with the car.

Regarding your comments on colour, I also pondered over the colour choice. After having viewed the various You Tube 718 Cayman videos, I settled on the Graphite Blue metallic. My view was, after owning 3 silver Caymans of various shades, and not keen on White, Black, Yellow or Red, I felt the need for a change.

So, ultimately I decided on the understated but classy Graphite Blue. The Miami Blue launch colour looks great, but a tad too flashy for my taste and also expensive for what it is.

That's good then, saves a few £s to spend on other things.

Im really not sure about the colour, that's what's delaying my order. I was originally going to go for Carrara White but after going to the Porsche Pageant at Chatsworth House yesterday I'm not so sure.

I've never been a fan of silver but I do like the GT Silver on the configurator. I also love the Lava Orange but would I tire of it after a while. At the moment I'm thinking of Miami Blue but that could change again.

Dealerships generally give you some goodies and in some cases they happen to include the mats but it is down to the dealership. My previous Cayman S had them in the carpet colour but I changed them for Black then washed them periodically, I removed them when the car was traded at 9 yrs old 88,000 miles then jet washed and dried them, they still look good as spares for the car I have now.

 
I don't believe it, they've added two more colours to the configurator, Sapphire Blue and Mahogany. That makes my decision even harder, I like the Sapphire...

 
I opted for Sapphire blue last autumn and am very happy with it.

It's certainly noticeable and several people have asked for photographs to be taken with it, I've never had this with previous Porsches.

 
O dear!! two more colours to choose from. Our final choice was between Agate Grey & GT Silver. We looked at a new 911 in the GT Silver colour and my wife was not so keen. Fortunately a customers Cayman was in for servicing in Agate Grey and she fell in love with that, job done!!. I'm very happy with her choice. The biggest challenge I had was with the impressive list of optional extra's, that took nearly a two months to sort out after having three test drives and a Porsche experience day at Silverstone. I'm fairly sure I've got it right the extra's still came in at over 20k. Just got to wait now till September for our first ever Porsche. good luck with yours!! John..

 
Agree, Sapphire Blue is a good colour, especially with silver wheels...........Porsche adding extra colour options has got me going now.

GT silver is the best silver shade IMO, having owned a previous CS in that colour.

My previous CR in Meteor Grey was well received, so Agate Grey very similar and will look good. Either Silver, Anthracite or Black wheels look good with Grey.

I'm still with Graphite Blue, Silver wheels by a narrow margin. I shall have to make up my mind for sure before the final sign off of my order.

The hardware spec is the easy bit, it's the paint colour that is the tricky part.

I must say that I really love the colours of my Racing Yellow Cayman. In 27 years of Porsche ownership (944/3.2/SC/996/997) I have never had so many people comment on how gorgeous it is.

Mind you I do love the new Miami Blue...

 
Afraid if I was buying a new Cayman it would be in Carmine Red, I once had a 944 turbo in a similar colour

 
Just had a play with the configurator (again) and specced the Sapphire blue with the 20" Carrera S wheels and LED headlights... really like the look of it.

Another speccing question, what are the benefits of the PASM? I'm only order the base 718 Cayman so will it make much difference to that? Also speccing the PDK and Sports Chromo Pack (not the sports exhaust system though, just the sports tailpipes).

With the other bits and bobs I've specced it's come to a total of £53,234.

 
My advice is to go for the PASM option, even on the base Cayman.

The spring rates & damper settings more compliant for a start, and the PASM system will make millisecond adjustments to the dampers to control roll, pitch and squat. PASM also has the Sports option which is a much less compliant setting useful for minimising roll when cornering on smooth surfaces. Sports Chrono is an "essential" option IMO.

The Sports Exhaust less so, it's more of a personal preference. The silencers are smaller and lighter than the standard exhaust, and may I say, on the 718 Boxster S PDK I drove, sounded quite good..........for a 4 pot turbo. The sports tail pipes do look better than the standard option on the base Cayman.

I agree, go for PASM. It's quite difficult to do a like for like comparison of similar cars with and without PASM on the same roads, but I specced my previous 987 Cayman S on 18in wheels without PASM, thinking that the decent tyre depth would give a better ride than 19in wheels. The ride was OK but a bit "joggly" on typical British patched, potholed roads, by which I mean a kind of continuous small amplitude fore/aft pitching. When the 981 came out I was lent a Boxster S with 20in wheels and PASM which rode incredibly smoothly over the same bumpy roads I had driven often in the Cayman. I was so surprised that the ride could be so good on 20in wheels that I bought a 981 Boxster S of the same spec, and am still delighted. Whilst I suspected that some of the difference was the comparison between 987 CaymanS and 981 Boxster S, when the Boxster was in for service last year, I was lent an almost identical car with 19in wheels and no PASM, which rode just like my previous Cayman S, ie very noticeably more joggly. The difference was remarkable. So I concluded that in addition to the other benefits of PASM, the normal ride on normal roads was actually much better. It may have all changed on the 718 of course, but I suspect not.

 
PASM and wheel sizes are individual choices but I had a 987S 2007 MY which rode well on 19" wheels but my son found it harsh and he has a 987S Boxster on 18" we both use 18" for winter tyres so a good reference on the tyre sizes, I now have a 987.2S Cayman with PASM and it does ride better and corner well on the soft setting switching PASM on stiffens the ride significantly so on poor surfaces I tend to switch it off but the roll is still well controlled.

It may seem expensive but it gives you optional ride quality for differing surfaces and when on smooth fast roads makes a nice difference, when you have sport chrono it usually or has in all Caymans I've driven bring on the PASM when you switch to sport or sport plus while warning you that PASM is in the new setting, switching PASM off does not switch sport mode off so it's normal suspension with throttle and PDK being faster response, don't forget that PSM is backed off too whenever Sport mode is on.

 
Thanks for your thoughts, I think it is something I'm going to seriously consider.

But what's the difference between the sport mode on PASM and sport mode on the Chrono pack?

it also drops the ride height by 10mm and I think it'll make the car look a bit better (probably all the wrong reasons to want it).
