Silverstone Classic event

ORIGINAL: Fred Hindle

There was particularly smart Silver 996 turbo, very clean, lovely looking thing!

Last time I saw this car it was had deersh1t on the outside, it now appears to have bullsh1t on the inside.[;)]

Cheers,

lol. I took the Friday off work and spent all day washing the Deershxt off . Actually took the wheels off, scrubbed and re blacked the wheel arch protectors, cleaned and polished the wheels, even spraying the tyres, front splitter, sills, and rear undertray with some gloss stuff I bought in Aldi. Just missed the "bullsh1t" !

I did buy the Porsche club kit of Swissvax on Saturday at special club prices, lol. So best take all week off now to clean the outside and inside ready for Sunday! Not sure what to do with all these brushes and pads!

By the way Fred, How are ur Volkswagens?[:-]

Ouch - that really hurts! Mine was the "plain" Lux....

That'll have been Rick, John and myself, pleased to meet you! The reason was a git in an Alfa Spider who'd been playing silly "I can cut all three of you up in turn" games, and had to wait behind us. At least we saved him from himself - he would never have understood the meaning of "average speed check" []

lol

Paul,

Sorry to insult, I meant a single colour on the outside. I did saw the Alfa buzzing back and forth. Having reached the "bored" stage of my journey, the rolling coincidental line of 944s and the angry wasp behind, all on the legal speed limit really tickled me.

[I also met the dude with the cup 944. Although some of the facts seemed unbelievable - 500bhp with 1.7 bar boost - ÂŁ20k - ÂŁ30k in value, anyway it seems it will be a feature of a specialist Porsche magazine, so all will be revealed]

We tried to explain to the chap that he was talking gonads - I actually thought it was sinking in, but apparently not.....

After both Rick & Fen had tried to explain to Cup Man that his car wasn't a 500 bhp Porsche legend I felt a little sorry for him. (What a conscientious Asst Reg Sec I am?). I printed off the section from Michael Cottons book which related to the 944 Turbo Cup. This noted that the '86 cars (comparable with the age of his chassis at least) were 220 bhp.

I handed him the sheet in good cheer on Sunday :-

"I thought you might find this of interest"
"Oh I've read that, here's one for you"

He presented me with a photocopy of December 04 Excellence. While this had more info than Michael Cottons book it made no claims of power over and above 217 bhp for the '86 cars.

He then suggested we look at some web site or another where there was a 500 bhp Cup Car:-

"You have got a computer haven't you?" he asked Rick
"I think I can probably find one" was his reply.

I can only assume that because Mr Cup has seen that there is such a thing as a 500 bhp 944, because his car is the ultimate racing 944, his must have 500 bhp as well.

According to Excellence, while only 220 bhp, the Cup cars were still a bit special (Porsche only made 40 86 cars for a start). In addition to sunroof free seam welded shell, roll cage and fire eater the car should have had some trick items like magnesium inlet manifold, sump and transaxel casing; 924 mirrors (to reduce drag), special clutch, oil cooler, lim slip, strengthened gears, Bilstein suspension, hollow 21mm adjustable rear anti roll bar, forged wheels, stiffened bushings, no ABS, no air con, no power steering, no rear wiper etc etc.

If this was a Cup car (and the cage manufacturer suggests it might well be) it is far from a bog car and (subject to what is left) is tricker than the 250 Turbo that it spawned.

Had Mr Cup dwelt on this information (all of which he had to hand) we would have been suitably impressed I am sure. It is a shame he didn't bring this detail to the party rather than making bold claims which were irrelevant to his car.

Of the 40 '86 cars 2 were written off while racing and all of the cars sustained significant damage in a series which "competitors neither gave nor expected any quarter". Engines were sealed so your only advantage was suspension set up and guts.

As it happens I am quite grateful for the experience as I now know more about 944 Cup cars than I did previously.

Any pics of the "Cup" car ?

PS : I think the magnesium sump is a fairy tale, as I have looked at several Cup cars here in France and none looked any different than the stock turbo sump.
Also, there is little point in making this part out of magnesium as the stock unit is light enough and magnesium does burn very well indeed.

That was the conclusion we came to over a couple of beers, and a chapati, sitting down by Stow.

There are many inconsistencies between Michael Cottons explanation and that printed in "Excellence".

The French sites do seem to have more info available, but I can't speak French well enough to come to any conclusions.........except......they ain't 500 bhp.

Well, feel free to ask me for translations when necessary.
Throw away the beer and try red wine, that may help too [;)]

As far as inconsistencies, even in Germany they sometimes are not sure about what they put in their cars.

Looking forward to seeing some pictures of this car. '86 cars had a specific cage different from the following ones.

Also of interest (to me with my twisted mind) was an OK looking Cobalt blue Turbo cab for sale - one of the selling features was 70k miles with a belt change at 36k. On looking at the history the belt change was actually at closer to 39k - in 1994! I'd have trailered it away if it was mine with 13 year old belts in it!

That was mine. You are right about the belts being somewhat old - they are going to be replaced imminently, however they had a visual inspection from a Porsche dealership who said they seemed fine but overdue being replaced and should be changed as a precaution.

I am in two minds about how much to spend on doing up the car as you rarely get back what you have spent. I think I'll be doing mechanical jobs - belt change, service, air-con, and fluids change, and probably leave any cosmetics to the next owner. The alternative is to spend whatever it takes to make it as near mint as possible and then ask top money for it. I'm in no hurry to sell so might get it done over the winter.

It was only the belts I found seriously off-putting (I have a soft-spot for Cobalt Turbo cabs), but it's a serious one - in all seroiusness I wouldn't turn the key until it had the belts done. What a technicican can tell by looking at a piece of rubber that is now 4 times its initial life expectancy I'm not sure and I certainly wouldn't trust it.

I was hoping to be able to have a chat with you to impress that on you, but I guess now is good enough. There are several people we could put you in touch with who have lost belts to their great expense and I doubt any of them were anywhere near 13 years old It's all but due on the miles also.

Really: get them done.

Three really good days (but very long). I've started to work my way through the (over 3,000) pictures I took so may post a few relevant ones on the forum in the first instance because it's going to take me a while to get them on the www.cannell.co.uk website!

Axl, mail me at sales@highgatehouse.co.uk and I'll get you out a replacement decal. So far I haven't had any other letters go missing, so your car must be faster (It's not a 500 BHP cup engine is it) LMAO.

I think our red . red . red . display looked really good and was only bettered by Fe??ari Club's red red red red red red red red display PMSL.

Hats off to the 968's, a seriously impressive turnout. If I'd known I'd have done you some anniversary decals similar to the 25 year oned I did for ther 944s....

A lot of people worked really hard to make things work right and it turned out very well. There are some of us that think this was our major outing so far this year and it will be interesting to see how Ragley compares. This event was a bit similar to the PCGB Brands festivals as it combined racing with a really good social event (although no camping). Thanks to Tony Bull for sorting my Sunday car pass and to Geoff Ives for --- Just being Geoff and entertaining LOL

Congratulations to Steve Rance on his 6th overall and 2nd in class on Sunday. It was good to see him and Robin Clark coming round the last lap together in their GT3 Cup cars.

We did have some good drives up and back to London each day and there was some 'sport' but the p?ick in the Alfa in the 50MPH M1 section on the way back on Sunday evening really was an accident waiting to happen. Interesting manoevers to say the least to get past all the cars doing 50 mph in the average speed camera zone ... His hand signals summed him up really well - an obviously very accomplished wan?er PMSL. We were wondering if the police helicopter was overhead while we were in the 50 MPH stretch 3 abreast - would have made a lovely video to go along with our register parking display LMAO. MarcBC - thanks for the company down to J2, Paul's red car was a cupcup, johns black and my red (loud) one were cupcupcup's for the day !

My car of the event was a Fe??ari 512BB Boxer, best bar was in front of the AC replicas, the most confident totty pulled up among the classic e-types and gullwing Mercedes SL in her 924S and just left it there!, most famous pensioner looked to be Jackie Stuart's grandad in an electric chair (Sian - post the picture!), best tasting pint was bought by Fen [:D], most interesting character had us in stitches with his unique French import ...

I came across the www.cannell.co.uk website last week whilst looking for road test stuff - if that's your site eastendr, thanks very much! When's this Ragley event everyone is going on about? I'm assuming that's Ragley Hall which ain't far from me. Be nice to meet a few who have helped out in my first couple of weeks of ownership.

Two of the Volkswagens are doing fine, the third is in just as many pieces as it was last year.
Power washed tthe deer pooh off the 944 last week. It now needs a good clean inside and out.
Spent all day yesterday cleaning the Jeep for the concours at Woodvale, by which time it may have a Porsche badge on it.

Cheers,

You'd have to do better than that to insult me - you get a very thick skin being an RS.....[:D][:D]

We were actually re-creating the 3-abreast parade lap theme....[8|]

Great day on Sunday and pretty amazing weather considering the forecast.

Sadly I missed the infamous cup car, but I wasn't too upset as I saw some CupCupCup cars which are much rarer :ROFLMAO:

The Porsche Open race was great, it must be at least a couple of years since I last saw one and I'd forgotten how amusing they could be. Some of the contact did look a little 'touring car' and wandering round the padock afterwards I was trying to spot cars that hadn't been damaged.

If there's one next year then I'll try and do both days and have my car in a fit state that I'll be happy for it to go on display.
