So very tempting...

'Twould be a big step down performance-wise from an S2, but it may be an improvement on a turbo?

LO Ben great question & here goes for me

Close to zero MPG , huge bills if it goes wrong which it inevitably will , looks like it would usually be driven by a pimp or a drug dealer [:D]

One heck of a drive though for sure. One of my many 'whimms' once was to get an M3 not a 5 as insurance is no problem but I couldnt live with the M series image or the repair/fuel reputation all of which are very negative to my mind. If i wanted that sort of MPG but with a bit more class ( in my dodgy eyes) I'd go for a well sorted Audi RS but I know its just my thoughts.

Regards

Mas

There is a silver version of this parked in a layby close to me daily with a for sale notice on it.
103k miles but full BMW SH. 3x3 number plate and £6995.

A lot of car for the money, but i dread to think how many mpg that would give even if driven sensibly. Repair bills would be huge, insurance probably the earth (not a classic). You would be of first name terms with your local filling station too.

Stick with the Porsche - its rarer and altogether a much classier machine (IMHO of course).

Ben,

Tough one to call as I see it there are a few for's & againts but mainly...

Against......Wood trim[:'(]

For...........I could have your wheels[:D][:D][:D][:D]

See you at Rutland??

Oh I dont know it is lot of car for money, but mileage low for age, though I'd be tempted

Would it really be more expensive and slower than a '44 it has got 400bhp?

Quick nosey in autotrader throws up a good number similar age (2000) some very understated

Hi Andy, yes the wood trim would have to go, but I think there is plenty of alternatives. Not sure I'm going to be able to make Rutland now I'm afraid. Gutted as I really enjoyed it last time.

Some interesting comments about this car which I have certainly heard before. I'm looking at a possible new job which would likely mean losing the company car, and I don't think I could then justify the 944, so I'm considering replacements (nice, quick, but fairly practical daily driver)...

E46 M3 (with CSL bits) - too common?
E39 M5 - too old?
Monaro - too thirsty?
C55 - too rare?
E55k - too risky?
CLK55 - ditto?

Would love to stretch to an RS4 but they haven't dipped under £20k yet and may not for some time. Probably looking at a budget of @£15k.

An E39 M5 in good health will do 60 in sub 5 seconds and 100 in around 13, making it slightly quicker than a standard 250 hp 944 Turbo in a straight line. It is a great car. I love the whole of the E39 Five series range and have done about 250,000 miles in them. They are getting on a bit, and most have not been maintained regardless of cost. As with Porsches of a certain age, the factory service schedule is only a start if you want to keep the car in excellent condition.

I would love to have one if I could afford a thirsty car for my long distance everyday travel - that's what I keep my BMW diesels for. As a fast, discreet, quality four-door saloon they are superb, but you need pretty deep pockets to keep a car like this in perfect condition. I would look to buy privately.

http://www.pistonheads.com/doc.asp?c=161&i=17393 for the scoop as seen from the perspective of 2007. Obviously they have all got four years older since then.

Ben,

Sorry you can't make Rutland - another time

I am not a great lover of BMW never like the driving poistion, the Monaro is a good machine reasonably rare and you will be surprised at the fuel consumption it is good!!
Well the right up's and selling adverts say so!! and I think you get value for money.

Hope it works out for you, can you not keep the 44 as well?

I could keep the 944, but it would mean running a boring daily which I'm not sure I could live with. Plus, don't think it'll be too long before the family grows again, so the budget will be ever-tightening...

Another consideration....Focus RS Mk1, but wrapped in metallic black, with 18" Oz supertourismos and an interior retrim in cream leather?!

This

I prefer the straight six to a v8

Although the PO of my 944, who also had one of these said he thought his wasn't as quick on motorways because of the torque of the 944 ( a bit tweaked to be fair)

M5's look good value and are amazing cars - bit of a risky purchase I guess, but so is a 944 turbo

These things look tempting but when you look into them the running costs are horrendous - especially if you use the performance, and what's the point in having the performance if you can't or are too scared to use it. At least the 944 is cheaper to run than an average family hatchback. Instead of the SMax I was tempted with top of the line VW Pheatons or Audi A8's which could be had for about the same price and only four years old with 30 - 40k miles on the clock at the time. Bearing in mind this is a £70 - £80k car so was furnished with every conceivable gadget. But when I looked into the running costs I was gobsmacked and just couldn't live with the risk.

yes+1 with scott, i nearly bought one [m5] a while back.friend of a friends, new vanos,ap racing brakes etc.etc ,really well looked after but horrified at the running costs and the "bad" image problem m5 and 3s seem to have, especially in my area,,, jason p

A good mate sold a cosmos black one recently, awesome bit of kit !!
V8'S ? you want an E38 735I check my signature !
Cosmos Black with sand beige sport interior and factory fitted Alpina suspension, electric everything and some, this engine won 62 world wide awards, at tickover you can place a pound coin on the edge on the central cover and it does not move(i have done it).
It does 24/25 mpg around the houses and after a run down the M6 last week at 80/90 mph average was showing 27.9 mpg.
Unfortunately mine is now for sale as i have too many hobby cars and not enough time or money to keep them all, i have a guy coming tomorrow with a view to buying and another lined up, all without advertising (word of mouth) and i will turn a profit BTW the car is mint with FSH, I will be sorry to see it go but 4 cars is getting silly and expensive [:(]
