Some pics of new custom front mount intercooler.

Hi Guys,

Paul kindly resized some pic's that were on Rennlist of the new front mount intercooler. I tried to post before but they were too large. Anyway I thought some of you may be interested to see them. It's a mod that I've wanted to do for some time as we really get some consistently hot weather down here (30c today) and some months to go before Summer. Also doing an event at Bathurst in December so it can only help.

Make sure you have really good junctions on those pipes under the badge panel. They will be a right sod to get to if you blow them off.
 
It is 3" thick x 18" wide x 12" high.
The core weight is 6kg.
The design is unique to this company.
Coarse external fins to help flow to radiator with internal turbulators of their design.
They measure the flow thermally so it is very accurate.
They have been making i/c's for 20 years and have done multiple 1000's of them so very experienced.
We will of course, be checking temps. May get a competition radiator made up. In fact, probably will get one for our heat.
 
It will warm the air going into the radiator but if you look into the front of modern turbo cars they tend to have this type of arrangement because improving the thermal efficiency of the IC is about as close to free power as possible. Me Saab for example is much worse because in front of the IC is the radiator for the Aircon, then the IC then the radiator.

The foils on these types of IC's tend to be much more spaced out then the IC's which are not designed to fit in front of the radiator, hence not damaging the air flow into the radiator to much.

I think this IC looks fantastic. If I had a 951 I would be looking to fit one of these as probably the next upgrade after a stage 1.
 
I wish you hadn't showed us this! It's going to have to be added to my mod wish list which is now running at around £8k minus installation costs! And I have a cosmetic job list running alongside that which is also running well into the thousands!

The beauty of this arrangement is that is free's up the space the stock IC takes up for a secondry oil cooler or even your cone air filter to ensure you're sucking in lovely cold air in the first place.
 
Well Scott once you're out of your Summer at least the colder air will help with heat soak, but yes it's free hp as Neil has mentioned. Oh it cost $2k au including one off custom design, manufacture, and fitted which is a bit over 800 quid so that sounds pretty good value to me.
 
Nice one Patrick, the size of that thing must surely help with heatsoak under continued boost and drastically drop the intake temperature. The only other front mounted intercooler I have seen specifically for our cars is the Speedforce racing product which reasonable value at $875 US but is not as tall as Patricks custom made one.

The problem with a front mounted intercooler on our cars is the tight clearance between the underside of the badge panel right at the front. Speedforce use curved pipes but this removes some of the intercooler height, Patricks custom jobbie looks like it uses clever angled inlets into the intercooler to get round this and enable a taller core [8D]

I've also been looking at http://stores.ebay.com/Just-Intercoolers for a universal fit intercooler but there are not many around that could fit into our space and also have top mounted inlets like the Speedforce. The upside is they are proper front mounters built for a radiator behind and they also range in price from only $69 up to about $169 [:D]
 
Oh for sure you can buy cheaper if you shop around. In fact I think Special Tool's i/c is one of those ebay jobs, but you do have to do some mods to make it work and it would be made with a much cheaper core that may not work as well, but that is an unknown until someone does some back to back testing. I do like the idea of some sort of vent ala 968turbo to remove heat too. Fen made a suggestion of having vents at the hinge end of the bonnet which also has merit.
 
I like the idea of the bonnet vent you refer to.
I have a suspicion our cars run too hot under the bonnet and its why all the fuel hoses and wiring loom gets hard. Also why I get steam from the bonnet in light rain at low speed.[8|]
Someone should do a fiberglass bonnet with a discrete vent built in ahead of the bulkhead rubber seal. (like a merc c-class)
Perhaps it exists?
