SOS Advice Please

Hello,

If I may introduce myself, following the sudden and very sad death of my father I have just inherited a Porsche 911 Carrera 3167 first registered in Feb 1987.

My father suffered from ill health for a number of years and last drove the car in 2009 - when he somehow managed to lose the keys.Ever since then the car has been gathering dust in the garage.

I cant pretend to know the first thing about cars and as a result will probably sell it.

I guess I have 2 options ?

1) Sell as is ie no keys, MOT & as aeen ie have no idea if it even starts.

2) Go through the process of obtaining a replacement set of keys, get it fully (?) serviced and MOTd, get a valuation and then explore best options to sell it ?

Unfortanatly as a self confessed ignoramus on Porsches I dont even know where to start in terms of first/next steps.

I wonder if somebody may be able to offer any advice ?






 
Hi. First you will need keys. But that will mean a lock set.
Or just an ing lock assembly but this will have to be fitted at your home.
Because the steering coulom is locked.
Or costly recovery to a workshop.
A very nice 3.2 Carrera can sell for £38-£45k.
Where about are you in the country so I can recommend a specialist repair.
Dont sell as is have someone appraise the car first.
With out seeing the car maybe £15-£20k

You will do your self and your father a good deed by getting the car recommisioned as this will get a better price
You didn't say what the car is i.e. Targa, coupe as this makes a difference in value secondly it needs to be assessed by somebody who knows these wonderful cars .If you have access to the vehicle you can remove the ignition barrel and a good locksmith can manufacture new keys
Just to give you an idea about prices basket case is about £12-17000?
If you say where the car is a region guru will willingly give advice ,and just as tastier some photos and info from the log book which will give the vin number

First of all I would like to say thankyou to all for such helpful responses.

The car is in Sutton in Surrey.

When over there later this week I will check the logbook for further details.

Go to your local OPC with all the documents you have and they will get a key cut from the VIN from Germany,

The barrel cant be removed from the ignition without destroying it as its pressed in at the factory, a locksmith maybe able to make a key if you took the whole steering lock to him

Door barrels are different and easily removed

 
Hi Boris, as advised above, don't mess with the ignition barrel, and if you don't know what you're doing leave the door locks alone. Do as T911 suggests and go to you local OPC. In my experience, they are extraordinarily helpful.
once you have the keys sorted, find a local Indy to check the car out and advise you on options.

Try putting is a new key mechanism it's not that difficult and lots of classic specialists around selling spares. It could be over £20k to buy for an average 1987.
 
Please recommission the car, this will enable you to achieve the best value otherwise chancers will try and knock the price down.
As Graham mentioned deep condolences on the loss of your father, he was obviously a man of good taste.

Hi, I believe, like T911UK said in post no.7, that if you take the vehicle details to your local PC they should be able to supply a new key for your existing locks. You will not need to have any new barrels fitted to the car.
I hope you can get the car professionally re-commissioned by someone that knows their way around these cars and after all the years of inactivity.

Hi there,
My sincere apologies for my radio silence expecially after so much kind support was provided by this forum.

Due to Easter my fathers funeral was delayed until Friday just gone, so I have had my head down dealing with that.

However the Porsche is now top of my list :).

My immediate challenge is that my father was not great on paperwork so I am currently wading through piles of the stuff to try to find the log book !

I am assuming that in practice I will require the log book and registration document before any next step ?

Thanks again to everybody here for all your interest and follow ups - I will continue to provide updates.
 
Sorry for your loss ,you will need every bit of paper on the car as possible depending onthe age and type you could be looking at £35- 70,000 ,good luck
Be aware there are one unscrupulous (dealers) people out there so don't take the first offer
