I know this subject has being exhausted in the past but....my speakers ahve finally 'blown'

i have looked on clarks pages of how do change them and that seems 'ok' but i jsut need to find some spekaers that fit. I knwo on clarks pages he has a list of reccomended spekaers but these only seem to be available in the US. has anyone found any commonly available UK speakers (or us that deliver for a reasonable amount) that fit in nicely??

Thanks

I'm pretty sure any 6x4 speaker fits. I have used Pioneer ones designed as custom fit for SEAT Ibiza '93-'99 and similar vintage VW Polo and Golf in the past.

Pioneer (I think, or maybe another brand) do a range of upgraded speakers for standard fitment into a range of cars including 944's. I think they have a 2 or 3-way oval that fits into the doors.

If you ask behind the Parts desk at Halfords they (used to) do some lo-profile Pioneer speakers which sound great in the front of my 944; they might well be the ones to which Fen is referring. Not sure about on the Lux, but on my Turbo the recess in the door is much shallower than on the 924 and some speakers are just too deep. I also have some shallow JBLs which are pretty beefy. In the rear of the car you are much less restricted (except in terms of actually changing the speaker...)

Halfords do sell 6x4 speakers, but they're priced at £49.99 for a pair. The quality of them is pretty good though! I've checked this out already, and as I work for Halfords, I've been looking for a decent set to fit my 1984 Lux. The speakers in the doors have blown, and I'm not sure about the rears yet. Getting the rear panels off to replace said speakers is proving to be a bit of a ball ache. So two pairs of speakers is looking likely for me (ouch!).

So the JBL's in halfords (£49.99) do definetely fit into the front doors of a 944 and most probably also the rear?

I have fitted a pair of the JBL's solded @ Halfords to my fronts, the sound is really very good, and they do fit, however the grills are alittle distressed as there is a raised lip around the edge of the speakers, so the grills dont sit completely flush. But it would need to be pointed out for anyone to really notice, and in balance they are a better speaker and give a cleaner and crisper sound.

ok thanks everyone.

I will go and buy them on the way home.

Let you know how i get on with fitting them.

Hi All,

My first post but I have just finished replacing the rear speakers in my 944S this weekend - here is a link to some information I found helpful -
Incidentally I made an adapter which fitted in the same place as the original speakers but allowed fitment of a standard 6.5" 3-way speaker (great sound).

It is much easier than you think, I recommend removing the rear windows which is very easy when you have an assistant and patience. I used some plastic coated clothes line to replace the window in the frame and now you wouldn't even know by looking that the speakers have been replaced..... until that is you turn the stereo on

Nice install David. I've been putting this off for aaaaaages. Was it really that simple to get the window glass out?

Welcome to the forum by the way. Excellent first post [:)]

Thanks :)

Yep very simple got my mum to stand by the side of the car and make sure the window didn't fall on the pavement. But by gently prying up the seal (from the inside) around the B pillar and pushing the window it just popped out in a few seconds.... A little trickier getting it back in but make sure you stick the edges of the vinyl on the trim down well with some upholstery glue first then use the clothes line trick to pop the seal back in (place the rear of the window in the frame first) then just push on the window whilst pulling the clothes line inside the car to lift the seal of the frame.

Cheers

Asuming you haven't got the 10 speaker upgrade, they're standard 6 x 4 inch front and rear.

Apparently the only consideration is the lack of mounting depth for the fronts.

I've got some Alpines as well - not sure what model, they were kicking around in my cupboard at home, having been removed from an old Golf I once owned.

BUT (chav-tendancies coming out now) if you are after a better sound in your car, consider a small amplifier first, instead of new speakers. OK, it'll be a fiddle to fit in a 944, and you will need to think about wiring, but it will make MUCH more difference than a pair of better speakers. I bought a (lucky find) good quality amplifier on eBay for £29 which sounds the biz (admittedly through those Alpine speakers.) Look for anything made by Rockford Fosgate (particularly older ones), Phoenix Gold or Alpine, and you won't go that far wrong.

Most speaker companys do custom fit direct replacement speakers which fit straight into the original holes,i had infinity in my old 944 ,i have some JBL 's in my new car and they sound much better. As oli says golf speakers fit ,the ones you want are from a mk2 golf fitted to the rear parcel shelf supports which is where my infinitys came from !!!

Hello,
Have a look at these on ebay 160043798645. They are a right size and shape so will recess the same in the doors.
It is not me who is selling them, my Golf is still in bits awaiting the project restarting.
Whatever speakers you do get make sure the tweeter cone doesn't stand proud of the speaker lip or you won't get the cover to sit correctly.
Cheers,

Although I believe the rear speakers require the removal of the rear windows to enable you to remove the interior panel to get to the speakers. A few people reckon this is a pretty simple job so if you use the search function i'm sure you'll find a decent step by step description.

Thanks for all the advice.

Had wondered how the side panels came off to give access to the rear speakers - must say the idea of removing the windows is rather daunting ! Maybe will change just the fronts as they seem the lesser of the speakers to my ears anyway.

Will keep an eye on those ebay speakers [;)]

You can remove the panels without taking the windows out by lifting the rubber a bit at a time, its easier with the window out to refit but still possible.
