speakers

I agree; I did it once in my S2 coupe without taking the windows out. You do have to be careful not to tear the vinyl of the panels when you tease it out from under the rubber, but I didn't like the idea of popping the window out.

David,
You have to ensure that if the replacement speakers have a tweeter cone in the middle it doesn't stand proud of the main speaker. If it does than it will push against the speaker grille. AFAIK grille 'rings' or 'spacers' aren't available that would allow you to acommodate certain speakers.
Years ago I fitted a pair of Kenwood speakers in mine but the car was more 'current then.
Cheers,

If you look on ebay there is a seller who I purchased a set of speakers from and they are great. The item number is 220072652045 and they come with spacer plates so that you use your old grilles.

Thanks for that.
I don't have a pic of mine to hand but it's essentially the same with the hole being much smaller - about the size of a 4x6" speaker funnily. From your picture, it looks like I'm probably safe to have a go at enlarging the hole....carefully.

I have used Unicar on numerous occasions. Always found them to be sound and fairly reasonable. In fact they fitted the immobiliser to my 944 about 6 months ago. They have lots on nice head units to play with!!!!

My Speaker solution:

Went to Unicar in Leeds on Friday for their opinion.
There wasn't really enough room in the panel to make it worthwhile trying to fit larger speakers so I went for a direct replacement for the 4x6" - with Infinity speakers. Don't know how what the reputation of these is but they are a definite improvement with more mid and bass than the old Blaupunkt ones in (21 years old I presume).

Also added a small subwoofer in the boot - Alpine SWD 1600. About the size of a small video player, secures well on a few velcro strips and removes in about 10 seconds.

All in this was £200 plus about 2 hours of my time to fit, and a small piece of skin from the back of my left hand [] (now somewhere behind the head unit).

The improvement in the sound quality has been well worth it. The difference on the motorway is superb and I now no longer lose all bass tones beneath the Blue Flame exhaust, somehow without things sounding too loud.

BTW Cheapest improvement: just removing the piece of fabric stuck behind the perforations in the rear panel allowed a far sharper sound through. I was shocked at the difference.

Ian I didnt want to cut my car about with rear speaker replacements so I fitted a base box in the boot that fits nicely along the rear seat,it has quick release wires if I need to take it out and along with the upgraded front speakers it sounds much better.

To do the fronts is easy but you will have to put a spacer between the door card and the speaker grill when you replace it to accommodate any decent size of speaker cone. search not too hard and you will instructions on here how to do it. The cards will have to come out of the rear in order to change them yes. I am lucky mine came pre-done :)))) lol.

Guys,

Had the stero up load toay and the speakers are - shall we say - not really up to it..

So - how easy are they to change? Fronts are obviously 6x9, are the rears also??

To do the fronts it doesnt look like you need to remove the door cards - but am I wrong?

And as for the rears - not sure???? anyone know how to get to them?

Cheers

A

In my 944 lux the fronts are 6x4's not 6x9's. One of mine has started buzzing during 'bassy' tracks. Does anyone know what the maximum depth of speaker for the front doors is. I presume it must be around 5cm.

The door cards do not need to be removed for the fronts. The rears are apparently more tricky.

I think dirty harry is correct. Been a while since I had mine out but the hole for them to fit in is deffo for 6 x 4s I think.

Is it possible to put 6.5" speakers into a '44? I have been considering door pods but I am not sure if the door would shut then...

Later cars have a larger round apeture in the rear, whichll be covered by a plate in cars without the Nokia speaker upgrade. Youll have to remove the rear quarter window to get to them though (remove the aluminium trim and remove the window; then you can take the rear quarter trim out).

Simon

hmm - not sure I fancy removing the rear glass to replace the speakers....

Is it relativly simple? - am I likley to need new window rubbers or anything once removed?

Cheers

It's actually easier than it may appear to get the rear side windows out to get the interior side panels off - I did it myself a couple of weeks ago and believe me, I'm no mechanic. There's a how-to guide on Clarks Garage so have a look there. Just take your time about it, although that said, it was no more than 90 minutes to do it all when I did it.

I replaced my rear speakers recently and did not need to take the side windows out. I carefully slid the overlap out from under the seal and then carefully fed it back in under the seal using a little flat blade screwdriver to lift the seal as I went along. You can get 6.5 inch round speakers in there with a bit of fiddling!

I have also fitted 6.5 inch round speakers at the front with minimal fuss, slight nibbling of the door card sufficed and they don't foul on anything except maybe your knees when you get in and out![:D]

Prey tell, It was the fronts that I was thinking of. I have a lovely set of 6.5" Rainbow Prototype components ready to go in. Currently it has the old tired Blaupunkts in.

If a 6.5" speaker cannot be solidly mounted, what 6x4s have satisfied people here?
