Specialist insurers not so special...

Never mind the Turbo, I've now had my renewal through for the S2 with First Alternative and guess what?

It's gone down by £60, thats nearly 20% [:D]

Coincidentally my van insurance is due at the end of the month and the best quote so far is £1150 which is more than the best for my 944T. Insurance is a funny old game (or maybe its just turbochargers they dont like)

Its time to insure my 944 LUX. Im 23 with 2NCB and the Car is garaged and has a Clifford Alarm + Immob (Thatchem Cat 1). 10,000 miles SDP + commute to a fixed place of work. I also have 2 convictions IN10 + LC20

Best quote i had was £1,309 TPFT

Some reason i thought about trying "Classic car insurance" on google and first came up was Lancaster Insurance.

Quote.... £895 Fully Comp!! Cant belive it, no one else can get close by £400

There number: 01480 484809

Make sure you know exactly what you're getting with classic policies. I've not tried the one you've mentioned but all the calssic policies I tried didn't allow you to build your no claims bonus, had limited milage around 6k miles a year, wouldn't cover you driving someone else's car and didn't offer a protected NCB. They also had very large excesses.

I second that! I have found that the excesses tend to be higher - some as much as £500. I ended up with Carole Nash who used Chaucer Insurance, and an excess of £250 on 5000 miles per year. This also includes an agreed value.

my excess is £250. I dont want to drive other cars as i can drive all the works car through the company insurance. I Will double check the NCB thing thou when i call back Wednesday!

Ah, I forgot to mention - I don't get No Claims Discount on my policy, and I don't think you can use the number of years Classic no claims to reduce a normal policy (though I could be wrong here).

For most people the way a classic policy handle NCD is an advantage; they are really intended for second (or third, fourth etc.) cars alongside a "normal" car for everyday use. Most people with that setup have NCD on the normal car that they need to keep there so divorcing the classic policy from NCD means they can do that.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I have aways been surprised how NCD works to be honest. Common sense would say it should relate to the driver I'd have thought, yet it relates to the car. For example I have something like 10 years NCD on the hearse policy, the 944 is on a specialist modified policy that acts like a classic (i.e. no NCD involved). The Mazda lives outside and is borderline on age so not easy to get a classic policy on, so it's insured as a regular car also and has its own NCD scheme. That means I have none on it now (though I got a hefty second car discount from the same company I use for the BM), but if I make a claim for the Mazda it won't affect the hearse policy. Surely if I crash the MX5 that should make me more likely to crash the BM also in the eyes of insurers, no?[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I've noticed this about Insurers - it all seems to be geared around them getting as much as possible from you:

When I first went looking for insurance for my Porsche, I was asked about NCD. I have full NCD, but they said "Ah, you can't use that, it's allocated to your first car", even though NCD reflects your care when driving. Its not as though I'll take care in my first car, and be reckless in my second!

Then it came to accidents - someone ran into the back of me 4 years ago. They accepted liability, and I was cleared of any blame. "Ah", says I, "that accident is allocated to my first car, so doesn't need to be declared, surely", No. The insurance company count that against every policy! Even though you may build up NCD on two separate policies, the accident / points / whatever will be used by them to hike your basic premium.

Anyway, that's my whinge for the day. I feel a bit better now. Only a little bit though.

Grrrr []

Just checked and i will gain further NCD! I said i've been told that i might not gain further NCD through Classis insurance, he said "Yes, most others dont but we have gone through Zenith and you will gain further NCD after a year etc"

Now, just got to wait till July 22 till my Insurance starts and my old insurance on my current shitter finishes ! :)

Just renewed on Beaky with Liverpool & Victoria. I would suggest that those with LV read their small print as it transpires unless you specifically elect to protect your NCD you will loose it in the event of a claim, even if you had NCD protection previously.

Also....Now Beaky is in a locked garage, compared to off road parked previously, I thought I should get a reduction. Not so! Apparently they have changed the way they establish risk so it doesn't make any difference - you can bet that if it was the other way around I'd be paying more though. [][:'(]

I am tempted to go to a limited mileage policy again but, as I have said before, I hate the thought of budgeting my mileage. After 2000 miles on the Scotland Tour this year one would have to be prudent with further use.

Hi. Thanks for this. I'm with Liverpool Victoria at the moment for my main car, and my wife is with them for hers. I'll check our policies when I get home.
