Sport Mode

I recevied an email from the dealer offering a Sport Mode add on - I am sure others on here may also have received it

I have a standard 3.4 Cayman S ( no PASM )

Does anyone have any experience with having this retro fitted , I have driven a cayman and boxster with the factory sport mode and it made a tremendous difference on the throttle response

I am tempted.........

Would anyone on here recommend this ?

SPORT mode (manual and PDK vehicles)

Activated using the additional SPORT button on the centre console, Sport mode selects a sportier configuration to the throttle response whilst adjusting the rev limiter to a higher setting. At the same time PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) offers a harder damper setting and more direct steering that gives better road holding. In conjunction with PCM (Porsche Communication Management), the Sport mode function also includes a personal memory for light, wiper, air conditioning and door lock settings.
£695 (inc. VAT and fitment).

Hi, I just picked up my car today, an immaculate low-mileage Gen 1 Cayman S Tip. Was a replacement for our 997.1 C2S and have to say I think it is brilliant. Anyway, I don't have sport chrono and would be v interested in the addition of sport mode. Where abouts are you based ? Wonder if we could squeeze the price a bit if a few of us are interested ?

I am near Bristol but plan to return to Nottingham for some additional warranty work , so thats where I will have it done Not sure if the dealer would be able to offer a group buy but we can ask ;) Lets see if anyone else is interested

having never had sport chrono before on any of my cars i picked up my 07 boxster s yesterday and drove home with it on all the way around some great twisty bits from guidford.huge difference and would defionately spec it on any new car in the future (or retrofi depending on outcome of this thread!!) only downside was 18.7average mpg on super vpower!!! heyho you only live once-brilliant addition though[:)]

I got the email too from OPC Reading and was considering going ahead and booking in to get this done.

swapped the 993 -was going to go for the new cayman r like yourself alan as i wasnt able to use the 993 everyday(dodgy back!)but two of the 5 kids told me last month they have MORE diplomas/degrees next year so another £35k out the window and the porsche money goes again....boohoo!! glad they are all bright kids but....will have to wait 2 yrs to allow a little recovery of funds-i have told them this really is the LAST time I am subbing their education-started in 1992 and still going strong-couldve bought 8 new 997 turbo s with all the school /uni fees!!but dont regret a penny-they are good kids....linda and i will still probably end up in a shit old peoples home tho[:D] whens your R arriving?? bw linda and dylan

Would be interested to know if there are any pre-requisites for this? Is this designed for PASM vehicles only? If not then is the purpose of the Sport button limited to throttle response only? Will be interested to see how you get on....[:)]

I'm definitely interested. Only problem is that I'm based in Surrey/London so nottingham a bit too far. Gonna try to book mine in for end of wk. Did you get a discount (usual club 10%?)

No.

Changes the PSM reaction threshold too - from "oh look - there's a hedge" to "oh look - I'm in hedge" [:D]

I have had various cars in the past that have either been chipped or I have had them chipped More recently I would have always upgraded the supsension and brakes before undertaking addtional performance - my previous S3 had the suspension and brakes upgraded as well as ARB and bushes before the stage 1 and 2 and that made sense to me I cannot follow that route for now with the Cayman - I cannot retrofit PASM and to be honest having driven PASM enabled boxsters and caymans I personally didnt find it useful for my daily drive - the track sure but not UK roads My hope is that I will just get more of a kick from the throttle when overtaking as I am used to driving turbo enabled cars Should be interesting nevertheless I will let you know how I find it

You could always consider getting it chipped as well as adding Sport mode. This would make even more of a difference in Sport mode. I was talking to somone with a 996C2 3.2 and he was very pleased with remapping, they tested his engine at 295 before and 330 after and this was for a high mileage car. Not wishing to hijack this thread but does anyone have any experience of chipping the Cayman / Boxster GEN I or II engines as I would have expected simliar benefits? Look forward to hearing what you think of the Sport Mode upgrade.

I visited the dealer today for some warranty work and spoke about the planned sport mode option After some discussion with a couple of their techs we came to the conclusion that £695 was a lot of money considering I dont have PASM and would not benefit from the addtional memory options that would be available as I dont have PCM I do have the option to change the exhaust note , however the sport option would replace this switch so effectively I would just have a sport button which would replace both and I would not be able to choose exhaust / sport independantly either I also discovered they had not done this procedure on any cars yet and I was about to be the guinea pig In the end I decided not to proceed , and yes the salesman there was amazed that their techs had convinced me not to spend any money They did howewer loan me a beautiful 911 for 2 days whilst mine was being worked on , I know its been said a hundred times before but if only they had offered the Cayman with a turbo ;) So for now no Sport mode for me

ORIGINAL: spiker I do have the option to change the exhaust note , however the sport option would replace this switch so effectively I would just have a sport button which would replace both and I would not be able to choose exhaust / sport independantly either
Hi - is that because you already have the switchable Porsche Sports Exhaust ? Quite rare on caymans I think ? Its the one option I really miss on mine! Fully agree with you about not being keen where you're the first - but hopefully this procedure isn't too difficult.

Hi Spiker, I guess you've made your decision but I thought I'd add some more info for you. I bought my 18month old CS Gen2 PDK car in November from Porsche London and immediately did the sport chrono and flappy paddle steering wheel retrofit before picking it up. I also don't have PASM but I have to say for me it was still money well spent. It seems to transform the feel of the car and makes the throttle nice and twitchy and more natural for a Porsche.. However without it switched on it probably makes for more relaxing town and motorway driving. Thats what I've really been impressed with, with no buttons pressed the car is a nice relaxing drive in all conditions, but with sport mode, lever to manual change and the flappy paddles it then becomes a sharp little racing machine :)
