Sport Mode

Interesting feedback. Has anyone else here had the sport mode carried out a a retro-fit on a Gen-1 987 tiptronic without PASM ?
 
alex - thanks for your feedback I will let you know when I decide to have it done , I know me , its just too empting even with just the throttle response I will probably wait until my bonus comes through , I dont need to justify it to myself then ;)
 
Thanks Alex I have spoken to a couple of others about Sport mode since and they have the exactly the same opinion as you I am going to give it a month , hopefully get more feedback and then make a decision when my bonus comes through I need absolutely no excuse to spend money ;) Can I ask why you opted for PDK rather than manual ?
 
I went for it because I've got a wrist ligament injury and driving a manual makes it sore after a while. I've had 2 manual 911s and was very hesitant at the thought of an auto Porsche but with the injury and the favourable reviews I thought it was worth a go. I did a test drive of a standard pdk CS at the Porsche track at Silverstone and it seemed OK but I really wanted manual control sometimes and I couldn't get on with the buttons, so at that point decided I would need flappy paddles which were so intuitive on other cars I'd driven. Like you I also did some research on the sport chrono and wasn't sure but when I found this car and was changing the steering wheel I thought I might as well do it since I'm spending £40k. Since then I've been really pleased with PDK but it is very much dependant on the addition of sport chrono and flappy paddles which I think brings it closer to the more direct and racy feeling of driving a manual car. And although it will never have quite the same mechanical satisfaction of a manual, it does have it's own advantage of making driving so relaxing when stuck in queues or when you're just tired or whatever. That means I can now drive the car for all types of journey. Anyway, the bottom line is I will be seriously thinking of another pdk Porsche next even after my wrist is better :) Sorry for the long answer, I hope thats useful info.
 
I'm tempted to make a wise crack here about having a similar wrist injury certainly when I was at school , but i fear the wrath of the moderator plus I dont know how you did it so I wont ;) I am fortunate that my daily drive to the office takes about 1/2 hour and I am rarely if ever in traffic , however when I drive to London I will often take the wife's DSG golf for that reason The dealer opted to reduce weight on my cayman by omitting the locking wheel bolt on the ns rear last week so I am back there tomorrow , perhaps I should borrow a Cayman with sport mode to compare
 
Well, the Cayman I drove at Silverstone was in sport mode and absolutely brilliant on throttle response etc. It may have had other tweaks but it felt in that situation that it was just as good as my 997C2S, but dare I say it, surprisingly more fun? Even worse, reminded me of an M3 or a go-cart.
 
Spiker, yes, I've had one or two wise cracks ;) Thats a shame about the wheel nut situation. How did you get on, did you get a test drive yesterday?
 
Always good to get your nuts sorted They were super efficient and did them whilst I waited, so didn't have the time to test the sport mode I will let you know when I finally go ahead and write up my thoughts
 
I have sport mode as an original feature on my Cayman S but while I haven't got the Sports Exhaust, whenever I switch Sport Mode on, the note does change noticeably, ok I have a heavy right foot anyway. The car is a 56 Reg first registered 6/10/2006 Funnily enough Porsche usually bring in the next year's changes about October and the switchable exhaust came in for MY 2007 but I think this only applied to the sports exhaust equiped cars. Has anyone else noticed a difference in exhaust note when in sport mode but being without the sports exhaust?
 
Many thanks to this article and many of the previous ones - I have gone back 365 days! Excited about receiving my new PDK this week [:D] A bit daunting following the opinions on PDK recently but I had a tiptronic before so as long as its as good or better im happy! Will also ask Porsche Sheffield about the sport chrono after fit Richard
 
I have my 987.1 cayman-S tip booked in for the retro fit tomorrow (Tues) so will report back when done for anyone who is interested.
 
Had the sport mode retro fit carried out today at my local OPC. Some initial thoughts below, will post an update after a few days once I've driven it a bit more. Impressed with the result, you can feel the impact on both throttle response and the shift pattern on the tiptronic box. Throttle feels more urgent throughout the rev range and almost creates te illusion of having slightly more torque in any given gear (but appreciate this is just down to more fuel being used ?). The sport mode on te transmission works v well, doesnt cling to gears in an unnatural way but holds on that bit more when conventional auto mode would have upshifted. I found the adjustability great as it allowed for use of the auto mode when I may ordinarily have used the manual override (or full manual mode). At the same time, nice to be able to turn off when cruising where you want it to be more relaxed. Overall very happy and would definitely recommend. Just one word of warning - I was told the cost of a Gen 1 tip is actually £899 rather than £695. I'd been quoted te lower number and that's what they charged me but they seemed to be under the impression that the cost for tiptronic cars was higher. Could have been a mistake on their part, would be interested in others' feedback.
