Sports Exhaust!?!

I would never fit Janspeed tat! Porsche spend a lot of time developing the exhaust to flow and sound right.
Janspeed spend 5mins on a exhaust that looks rubbish and from my experince you have to spend days making it fit.

Saying that the rear under bumper wing would hide the thin tail pipe but with a little tail pipe and a big end trim it would look stupid when you look down it. Would look like one of those bolt on trims off Egay.

I have always thought that the ESS/Janspeed exhaust was a nice bit of kit, well made and giving a bit better noise than standard in a subtle way. I had teh twin tailpipe version.

Don't like their new way of doing things as per the picture though. [:'(]

ETA I also wonder whether in fact Porsche spent a fair bit of time making sure the exhaust didn't flow properly as part of their strategy of making sure the 944 didn't embarrass the Olde Worlde 911 of the time (Along with various other design elements designed to hobble the car).

Agree with the comments above - not happy with the fact that the revised version doesn't stand up to close scrutiny. I wouldn't consider buying an exhaust from one place and getting it fitted elsewhere, and I certainly don't have the tools/skills/facility to do it myself. Have asked S.A.R to come back to me if Janspeed can supply the original design.

I have driven Ron Smith's S.2 also with the twin pipes, which to me gave a very nice if slightly softer muted tone.

In the meantime, looks like the budget will be spent on new tyres.[:(]

I have read all of these posts with great interest. My first 944 Turbo only a few months ago had a sensibly quiet exhaust but with a nice raspy sound on heavy acceleration or blipping of the throttle. Basically it sounded a little sporty but not chavvy.

My latest 944 Turbo just sounds so quiet its like driving a hairdryer. I have to replace the exhaust ( only as i cant stand it quite so quiet) so I'm thinking that I may as well get one that will at least help in some small way with performance perhaps as I gradually upgrade the engine.
BUT , there seems to be no one answer as to which to buy and I also worry , if it's too loud will I have blown my money. I certainly dont want something 'chavvy' myself. If only it was all easy huh :p

Regards Mas

The noise or otherwise from exhausts is a very subjective thing. Much like Mas I always found the standard one too quiet, especially when combined with the less than inspiring engine note our cars are saddled with. For others, clearly any amount of a "fruity" exhaust note however subdued is a one way ticket to Chav hell.

I always found the ESS/SAR exhaust suitably subtle in the noise it made. My current Wortec device is rather less so. [:D]

+1 for the janspeed (ESS) SAR exhaust - I do wonder if the new exhaust does make the tail pipe protrude slightly more, this would be a good thing as the bumper can get very dirty with the original, the only slight negative that I found,
Tony

The previous owner put a stainless exhaust on which is very quiet and doesn't sit quite right. I have tried to re-mount it, but the bend around the transaxle is not quite in the right place....It is one of those things that is very expensive to change, especially when technically it doesn't need changing. I can hardly hear my car, on hard acceleration it sounds more like a touring car from the inside with all the whining, whirring and a-whooshing

Jeremy - that looks like a standard Dansk unit to me.... do you have a bill from previous owner which shows?

The standard Dansk is a pretty quiet rear box. If you have the front silencer (under the gearstick) cut out and replaced with a straight pipe for circa £100 it makes for a slightly fruitier noise on a Turbo and doesn't add any droning (well it didn't on mine)

I'll take a look through the thick file of invoices I have....
I suppose if I have the silencer removed I can have the 1/2" extra length added to sit properly around the lumpy bits!

A Turbo engine is quiet due to the lack of induction noise however (according to my F360 Spyder owning friend) they are by no means quiet when on full chat, its just that the driver doesnt hear it.

Well after considering the limited options, I went with the Dansk. Cost £175 inc delivery which was cheaper than anywhere else I could find - bought from 'annantone' off eBay who I believe others have used too.Fitted by RPM for half hour's labour.

Looking at the original one which came off, there was only a 1 mm round hole in the weld behind the back box, so the difference in sound is hardly noticeable. In fact I could probably have got away with not changing it for some time, as RPM didn't reckon it was an MOT failure. Hey Ho.....it's another thing off the list
