Sports Exhaust

HI Andy, I had my PSE for my GenII retrofitted by Reading. From memory it cost me £1900 but then I had some discount applied. The job did take longer than expected as it's quite a tough job for the switch fitment/wiring. It took their senior technician well over 8 hours (more closer to 16hrs to fit). Quality of the work was excellent, neat and tidy. I'd had my car 2 years before doing it. The plug was disconnected from day 1. It needed a few miles on it to really hear the difference but personally it made the car more enjoyable to drive than with the standard exhaust. In a tunnel, it sounded fantastic, without a doubt a good addition for me. I have one as standard on the GTS and this is sounding nice but then it's got a large aluminium induction unit giving it a slightly gruffer sound than before. @Alex - agree the GTS Pan sounds great. Heard one as it passed me at the OPC, very impressive sound.
ORIGINAL: AndySmith Bit of an update ... Armed with all this new information, I researched the cost of having a PSE retro fitted. There is a thread on Pistonheads where various people have done this with OPC's and their prices ranged from £1200 upwards. So, I rang an OPC (bit unfair to name and shame here) today and was given the following, to supply and fit to a manual geared 997 C2S: To a car without Sport Chrono - including wiring and dash switch - £2,956.70 - OMG!! To a car that has Sport Chrono and therefore an existing switch and wiring - £2,500 After I told them prices charged by OPC Bolton, Colchester, and Silverstone, they agreed to go away and take another look at the charges. Why is there such disparity between OPC's? I understand that they are all different companies but surely their charges should be the same or very very similar. Has anyone had a PSE retro fitted? If so, perhaps they could share their experience wrt pricing and where they had the work done.

Hi Mike I saw your car at Knowl Hill a couple of weeks ago when you bumped into a few of us having dinner and drinks and your car is a cracker. The exhaust sounds good - this is what I am looking for but it is a shame that it gets muted for drive by reasons. Hope to catch up with you in the future, again. I enjoyed an evening of nothing but Porsche talk! Andy

I should be hearing form the OPC today about pricing and hopefully that they have made an error in their calculations. If not, looks like I will be taking the car (if I get one without PSE) to a far away OPC to get a better deal!

Hi bajers I can appreciate what you say that being in the car will sound more muted than being a pedestrian. Liken it to in-car footage of an F1 car and the exhaust note sounds totally different than the drive by experience. I spoke with someone yesterday who also said that if you do a long journey the sound can be intrusive, in an annoying way. I said stick some ear plugs in so you can enjoy it when you want the sound!

I have been contacted by a member who has just moved onto a 991, and he so happens to have a sports exhaust system for a 997 available to purchase, he's kindly offered this to register members prior to other places.. Details are ; Sports Exhaust for 997 Gen 2. Been on the car since April 2010, for about 20k miles. £500 ono Please contact me in the first instance and I'll pass on your details to the member. garyw

Andy, With the PSE switched off, you can hardly hear the exhaust above the tyre roar! That is far more intrusive and annoying than the exhaust note. I am after a volunteer though to give my car a thrashing past me as a pedestrian just to hear what it sounds like but I don't trust any of my mates not to clear off with it for the day!! [:D]

In the end I had to chase the OPC for them to look into the disparity in pricing between OPC's. I was told that the prices quoted were around the same as other OPC's. They talked to OPC Bolton and Silverstone and were told that the prices I was quoting were for a special offer when they had surplus stock to shift and that current prices were all around £2,500/£3,000. Well that puts paid to considering a car without PSE and retro fitting. Now I have to find a car with a PSE at the right price and spec; where's that needle amongst all that hay? As I'm in no hurry, I have all winter to find the right car.
