After the success of reinstating the classic overnight WOTY (Weekend of the Year) in the Lakes last year, we have decided to kick start the season with another one-night break that’s easily accessible from our Region, yet still far enough to enjoy a scenic drive, an interesting lunch stop and essentially an overnight stay incorporating excellent food, great company and of course good value.
We plan to meet at Cherry Hill Garden Centre Stokesley Rd, Middlesbrough TS8 9DY, this will allow members from the North & South to gather in a strategic central location for everyone to meet prior to the run and enjoy a spot of breakfast before the fun begins.
This year we will be taking a scenic meander through the North Yorkshire National Park and on to Thornton-le-Dale, home of Mathewson’s Auctioneers, which some of you may know from the TV series, Bangers & Cash, as seen on the Yesterday UK TV channel, before eventually arriving at our overnight destination, Solberge Hall, Newby Wiske. For those who don’t know the TV series, it follows Mathewson’s - a dynasty of classic car auctioneers from a picturesque North Yorkshire village on their hunt to discover rare and interesting vehicles to auction for their current owners, as they do they uncover some remarkable vehicles, with many a heart-warming tale behind it as they do. Derek and his team are thrilled to welcome R3 to their premises but please note parking is very tight so be prepared to park in the normal pay & display village car park. This is just along the road from their premises but don’t worry it is huge and as is actually where the guys from Mathewson’s load and unload their recovery vehicles so you might even catch a glimpse or two of some of the team hard at work.
Aside from Mathewson’s, Thornton-le-Dale has won a ridiculous number of awards for being Britain’s Prettiest Village and has featured on countless calendars and chocolate boxes over the years. Quite right, too, we say – it’s absolutely gorgeous. Located in North Yorkshire, about 12 miles from Scarborough, it’s awash with thatched cottages, idyllic gardens and a stream that runs alongside the street. And if it does get you thinking about milk truffles, vanilla creams and other goodies, then you’re in luck; wander along to the Square and you’ll find a shop called the Chocolate Factory, which stocks enough handmade treats to even make Willy Wonka jealous, but don’t just take our word for it. Don’t worry if you end up over-indulging, though. You’re within the North York Moors National Park, so there will be time to walk off a few of those calories with a scenic stroll. The views are pretty spectacular, and we plan to leave plenty of time before we set off on the next leg of our journey to our overnight stop in Newby Wiske at the idyllic Solberge Hotel.
Each reservation includes, cream scone and tea on arrival, dinner, bed and breakfast, so you can relax knowing everything is hand after you check in and settle in for the evening. If the weather permits why not take a stroll around the beautiful tranquil gardens before your three-course dining experience later in the evening.
Sunday morning you are free to do as you please and leave any time you wish. After a relaxed breakfast I thought perhaps a scenic drive north, stopping off for a coffee along the way.
Costs:
For 2 people in one of the classic Double rooms with cream scone and tea, dinner, bed and breakfast £139.00 per room per night. (13 rooms)
For 2 people in a superior/deluxe room with cream scone and tea, dinner, bed and breakfast £149.00 per room per night. (6 rooms)
Non- residential diners, 3 course meal £26.00 per person if you wish to dine with us but prefer not to stay over.
Dinner is based on a 3-course menu with 4 choices for each course and must be pre booked in advance.
I would require a £50 non-refundable deposit per room at the time of booking and all outstanding balances must be settled at the latest one-month prior to this event, including payment for any non-residential diners.
Solberge Hall only has 26 rooms therefore bookings will be taken on a first come first served basis so don’t delay if you wish to join us. I have provisionally asked them to hold 20 rooms, judging by how popular our previous WOTYs have been.
