Squeeky screen - latest ideas?

Had a dig around the forum and there are suggestions for Pedros wax and also a Halfords bikehut brand to get rid of the intensely annoying squeek. Just wondering if anyone has found a newer product or alternative?

Teflon tape already in but the intermittent squeek is now fairly persistent! []

Many thanks for any suggestions!

Cheers,

Mark

I used the Halfords Bikehut chain lube option, applied it last year about October time as my screen used to drive me nuts !! Been out today for a three hour drive and absolutely still no squeek. My car does not have the teflon strip, I thought this solved the problem completely but obviously not.

Hi Andy,

Don't mean to be personal but where do you apply this lube[:D]

Assume you apply between the glass and rubber on outside? Do you apply all the way around screen?

Thanks

Graham

Hi Graham,

If you lift the edge of the rubber strip around the screen (this is not easy, start in a lower corner and then run your finger along) you apply the lube between the body and this rubber seal, I just applied the stuff using my finger any residue around the paintwork can be removed after with a cloth.

Another tip to save the windscreen corners from rotting is to lift the rubber seal after you have washed the car, you will be surprised how much water runs out that would otherwise have laid in there quietly rotting your car. I have also applied some waxoyl in this area under the seal from an aerosol, simply push the plastic tube attached to the waxoyl spray nozzle and squirt a bit in there.

Applied Pedros ice today - will see how we go! I have a nagging doubt that the sound is actually coming from the inside but it is definitely the windscreen!

Will report back! Thanks for the info so far....

Do you have a strut brace fitted? That was the only thing that solved my creaking after Pedros and tape failed (added bonus of better steering feel too).

Haven't fitted a strut brace but will consider that - I see that not many braces fit the 4 wheel drive setup - any clues on the manufacturer?

Also - it is now driving me mad that the sound is best described as 'creaking' and appears to be mainly internal.....I don't really understand it as it is a difficult to pin down 'internal' creak. Had various dashboard bits off but everything seems well bolted down. The screen is also well 'bonded' so I was dubious about the pedro fix anyway but tried it....

A shame because everything else on the car is solid as a rock but the incessent creaking is annoying the hell out of me! Any more areas that are prone to 'creak' at the front that anyone can think of?

Cheers,

Mark

I'd check the rear screen too as this suffers from the same issues. The famous windscreen noise has nothing to do with the screen itself, this is bonded as you say. Howver both the front and rear have a separate seal which covers the gap between the screen itself and the body which rubs on the body as the car's shell flexes causing a creaking sound. The wax goes on the inner lip of the outer seal, the bit covered in felt that sits on the body. A new seal is another way to go as is the teflon strip which was the official Porsche "fix". Another thing to look at is the sunroof. Press on the outer edges standing next to the car. Does it creak? If so some Wurth Rubber Care or the like helps here too. Porsche also had a fix for the Passenger airbag cover which involved three felt strips but is labor intensive to do as you need to take the dash apart.

Good luck

On my last 993 I found the underside of the dashtop had rubbed a shiny spot on the tinware underneath.
A dab of light grease there sorted that squeak.

No difference between 4wd and 2wd with respect to strut brace fitting (I have C4S too). I fitted the Fabspeed copy of the Matter GT2 brace - nicest looking one too IMHO.

I think you'll find that if you put a teflon strip around the edge of the keyboard (or lube on the keys) whilst accessing this forum the squeek will disappear.

Kind regards

I have inserted a 1cm long piece of the piping that is available to go between the bumper and wings, under the rubber, so that the cut end points out. It acts as a breather pipe and is barely noticeable. Hopefully this will allow any water that collects to evaporate and it is instantly removable for shows etc. I'd second the Waxoyl treatment. My rubber surround distorted but then was back to normal by the morning! Perhaps a bit less next time...[:D]

Mark, if you don't believe it is the rubber strip around the windscreen, just remove it and go for a drive. I think you'll find the squeak will stop instantly.

The best way to cure it is to fit a really nice stereo, and enjoy some tunes. That way you can't hear the squeak.

Works for me ! I only hear the squeak when I have a passenger, and turn off the radio.

will try the removal porker but I am absolutely convinced it is coming from inside now. I am concerned as I had the windscreen replaced TWICE by autoglass (second time due to aerial connection getting water inside and going opaque!) and on both occassions I have got this creaking (rather than squeek). Teflon was in place on both occassions and I have Pedros now exiting via every orifice on the car - slowly driving me mad!

So - a couple more questions?

1) Is it easy to put the rubber back in once out or is it better to buy a new one?

2) any suggestions of a good place to get the windscreen re-fitted? I need to get a tiny bit of corrosion sorted so was going to do this at the same time if it is indeed the bonding or something. I live near Wokingham....

Mark

Cobalt,

Specialised Paint in Reading near Reading OPC do 993 windscreen rust issues all the time. They have a contractor who does their screens for them to a good standard. Give Karl there a call, should be able to sort you out.

The windscreen on mine was done by Reading OPC, did a fantastic job the second time around so should not be experts!

Good luck.

Thanks GR - will call Specialised as I have heard about them from other sources...

We shall see - I hope the creaking is fixed because everything else on the car is tight and this is the one thing that drives me mad!!

Will report back after I have seen them and/or removed the screen rubber....

Cheers,

Mark

ha ha - thanks for the offer!!

Will buy a brace - Porscheshop has a carbon one for around £130.....

Cheers,

Mark
