steering rack help please

if i understand u right ,u bought the car from Mo?

Have nt seen him or his car since he moved home ...............however when i last saw it a beautiful example and very well cared for+ Mo is one of the few real gentleman , wud it hurt to ring and ask him how it ws left ?

Paul - I literally just had mine done at Northway. They strip the rack out and send it somewhere in London for a refurb. Talking to Ray and others there the refurb seemed the best option. Mine went in a fairly dramatic way, grinding sounds followed by a puddle in the garage. Topped up the reservoir and drove the 25 miles to them with no major issues. Car was out of action for a week (bit of a pain) but now it is back it feels pretty solid (I have my elbows touching wood as I write this).

So, for me, the refurb option seemed to work well and the 'new' option was only mentioned in passing by those guys due to the high expense.

Hope this helps!

No, I bourght the car from Rob Greaves, Mo's been nothing but help from the day I joined the forum.

I'm quite keen on the western power steering option, I suppose the price is a big deal here, 10% of the price of a new one from porsche before the vat!
I've had an email from them saying that they check everything, and would call me if the rack and pinion would need replacement, just need to get a price if the rack and pinion would be replaced. Oh, and a call back from ZF to see what they say.
As for the wishbones, I think I'll rebush them myself, just get the garage to get them out and refit them. From what everyone is saying, it should transform the car.

I have been advised by someone I trust that ZF is the way to go, they manufacture the original part for Porsche, they are a long established reputable company, and charge around £550. I was quoted around half a day to fit plus VAt on top of that.

On the subject of front wishbones - I had mine fitted with polybushes years ago, and it transformed the handling. I have Bilstein HDs also.

Oh, and don't forget to check the steering dampers. I haven't seen that mentioned above, but they can tranform the handling also if they are worn.

I had the rear wishbones and lower control arms replaced recently, and that is serious money !

Pretty much like driving a new 993 now though.

Hi,

My rack started to leak last year at approx 154,000 miles.Jay Gee (www.jaygee.co.uk) collected it from AMG garages here in Northern Ireland, reconditioned it and delivered it back ,all in 4/5 days at acost of approx £200.

No trouble since,6,000 miles later.
