Steering shake

I've found a couple of areas of concern on my car that could account for the shake.

When I hold the top of the front tyre (both sides) and rock them from side to side I can feel 1 or 2mm of play. The wheels are bolted on fine to the hub, but there is play elesewhere it seems.

Also there is play in the top steering joint.

All this probably comes down to the fact that everything is original and plain worn out!

Try adjusting the wheel bearing. Ideally the wheel should be rocked top and bottom in and out as doing it sideways always dispaces the steering slightly and it is difficult to distincuish between play and angular movement.

The method of adjustment is in the manual, and the bit where it says move with a screw driver refers to using it to push the thust washer directly, not to using it as a lever or in a tightnening/loosening motion.

Thanks John

I can hear a clunk and feel movement from the front wheels - I will certainly take a look at the manual to see if this will cure it.
