Steering wheel position

Has anyone ever tried moving the steering wheel up a bit on an early lux? I want to get more clearance for my legs.

Happy to stand corrected, but aren't all 944 steering wheel columns fixed? I agree that it's mounted a bit too low for my liking...would like to nudge it up by an inch or two.

You could get Williams to do it for you [:(]

They are fixed, just had a poke around underneath. There's a metal bracket that comes down from above and the steering wheel column bolts onto it. Certainly it wasn't designed to be moved but that doesn't mean it cant be. I'm going to replace my cracked dash soon so I might have a go then.

Slightly smaller and/or offset-centre steering wheel an easier option?

I fitted a Momo "Fighter" to ours - opinions vary of course but I really liked the feel and the look. 350mm vs OEM wheel at 360mm, so very little difference, but most of the Momo range are available in 320mm diameter also.

The "Jet" shown below isn't to my taste, but shows the offset centre - would certainly be more comfortable for you most of the time (?)

Also, check under the drivers seat runners. The early car I had had blocks under the runners to raise the seats. I removed them, it only gave a bit more space but it helped.

Thanks for the suggestions, although I've already replaced the wheel and there are no blocks under the seat. Might try a wheel spacer next.

How is the microsquirt ECU working out JamesO?

Its running well, some idle stability issues but I think I have that sorted. Will soon remove it to rewire as a permanent install, ditch the AFM and maybe fit more suitable injectors rather than running ballast resistors.

Is it one of these you used James?

OK, think I'm going to take the dive and order one. What did you do in terms of sensors, I have read that the temp sensors can be mapped to whatever you have so that shouldn't be a problem. The TPS and MAP sensor I guess just I would just need to purchase and install appropriate ones. The ignition system it uses looks like I should just be able to hook it up to the coil. Idle solenoid shouldn't be too much trouble. That mainly leaves the speed and reference sensor, did you install a new one or can you use the sensors on the 944 or do you need to fit a new one? And you mention resistors for the injectors so I guess I will have to deal with that too.

The only extra sensors you need are an intake temp sensor, manifold pressure and wideband lambda/controller.

Thanks for the info James. Can you use the speed and reference mark transmitters that are already on the 944? I remember some guy telling me you needed a trigger wheel or something. Had the car on a dyno yet?

The standard early wheel is offset and when I looked under / behind the dash the amount of serious work required decided me that my wheel was staying put!

Also, mine has no power steering and 215 tyres, so a smaller wheel which I tried was not a good idea either!
