Steering wheels

I'm thinking of changing my S2's wheel as I fancy something more chunky.

I want something which suits the car (nothing too modern or shiny!). My favourite option is the 'genuine' clubsport wheel with the embossed badge in the centre. This is £300 though which is a lot of money. It's possible to get a replica for £200 with the coloured badge. Can I then change the centre for one with an embossed badge bought separately? I've read about this here (in the first post) but no price is mentioned.

My interior is blue and so is my current wheel, is it possible to get the CS wheel in blue? It's listed in the options for the genuine one on Porscheshop but there's no option in the drop down box when you go to order. Is the CS wheel available from OPC? If i'm stuck with a black one does anyone have any pics of a black wheel in a blue interior?

The budget option is the Momo Prototipo. I like this a lot but it doesn't look as chunky as the CS and I think maybe it doesn't fit in with the interior as well.

Genuine CS steering wheel is one of the nicest feeling road car steering wheels i have seen/felt on any car.The copy ones are not stitched as good and don't feel as pukka i have had one of each. The genuine CS was fitted by Porsche cars GB to the S2 SE runout model very sure they do it in blue, then the 968 CS.Lovely lovely steering wheel, very thick great quality leather,if you couldn't tell i am a bit of a fan...[:D]

That's a pretty strong endorsement! I think i've decided on the OE CS wheel really, just need to bite the bullet and hand over the cash. Porscheshop have them for £276 including VAT. I can't find anywhere cheaper on the web but haven't tried OPC. Anyone know the part number or indeed anywhere which might be cheaper?

I have the prototipo in my S2 and I think it matches the interior perfectly, a really nice understated wheel that compliments the car well. You need to get the Porsche horn centre for it otherwise its not really giving the full effect.[:D] Edd

The CS wheels are lovely, but (as you have said), come at a high price. The very budget option is to get a boss and a Momo something-or-another wheel on eBay for less than £30 and fit them. I don't have photos but it's what I did, looks good and feels great. That's about 10% of the CS cost, and you are getting at least 90% of the benefits of a full CS wheel. (Although getting a Porsche crest for the centre of it is a good idea - thanks Edd.) As they say, you pays your money and takes your choice. Oli.

I had the CS replica wheel from PS in my old 944T and it was a nice thing to hold, but the 'proper' CS wheel with the embossed centre looks more discreet without the coloured badge in your face! I think the Momo prototipo wheel is more at home in the 70's classic 911s tbh ( sorry Edd, no offence intended![:D] ) although I was considering one for my 'Beetle' as i think they are a truly lovely thing to behold ('scuse the pun [;)]).

I picked up a CS wheel from PH classifieds for about 175 ish with the boss. I think it is a copy as it has the coloured metal badge set into the centre rather than the embossed badge. Personally it is great, brings the car just a little more up to date. I have seen others for a reasonable price but they tend to sell quite quickly. Just keep your eyes peeled.

The genuine CS wheel is attractive, but I found it too chunky to use. Im not certain about now, but the centre was not serviced separately.

I have the black CS wheel in a blue interior and tbh I've never noticed it doesn't match I don't have a pic to hand but have found this short in car vid that shows it [:)] http://s91.photobucket.com/albums/k293/diver944/?action=view&current=30100.flv

Some interesting replies there. In the photo which copperman posted the Prototipo looks great, I don't think it'd go so well with my blue pinstripe interior though. Where did the centre come from? I do really like the look of the original wheel but I'd just like something more chunky to hold. In other cars where I've changed the wheel for something thicker it's always made the car feel much more controlable. THe blue and black thing is interesting, the blues is very dark anyway. I've got a black wheel from another car so I might put it in place and see what it looks like.

A Momo (Monte Carlo, I think) wheel was available as a cost option (! - ! because the standard wheel which was deleted, cost many many times what the Momo cost). Non-trim-colour wheels look alright on series two cars because the instruments and cowl are always black. On series one cars they dont really go.

I found some useful pics on my home pc:

It seems that all the early 968's had the CS wheel, mine has a grey one to match the interior and seems to have always been that way, a couple of others over on 968uk report the same thing. I love it, its sooooo much better to use then the lozenge wheel its just not true. The lozenge wheel is very unique and iconicaly Porsche looking though but is horrid in the hands. I agree with 944man that the CS wheel is a bit on the thick side, you really notice it when you wear gloves. The Momo job I have in the race car is a touch thinner and a touch smaller and for me is pretty much perfect (looks exactly the same as fitted in Ferrari F40 etc.). Then the only decision is leather or suede.

I have a Mountney one I picked up for £15 (inc the boss) from ebay [&o] (too embarrassed to post a pic)

I really like the original wheel. If anyone's replacing theirs, and the stitching is intact, I'll gladly recycle it for you. [8|]

I have a spare perfect 365mm wheel in black Paul. I have a mint 911 3.2l Carrera wheel too, which Id forgotten about. [:D]

Suede wheels do get worn though - maybe leather is a better bet for a road car. My suede Momo was a great wheel - probably my favourite mod.

Ordered the CS wheel from Porscheshop today, black as they don't have any blue ones. Slightly sick as it was £288 including delivery [:(] Hopefully I can claw some of that back if I remove it when I sell the car. Just excited to see what it's like now [:D]
