Another solution to consider if this type of protection isn't your first choice is a coating from a company called GTECHNIQ. Itactually forms a very hardened glass like bond to the paintwork. It's very expensive (they coat planes and boats with it too) but another bonus is that you car will hardly need washing afterwards as nothing sticks to it!
I've had a layer of it applied to my wheels/calipers/windows and I'm very impressed. On my journey to work in the rain this morning, I barely used my wipers and this was when I was almost crawling. It's Rainex on steriods. I'll check the condition of my wheels at the weekend but they are still shining for the most part.
Now, not that my car looked like a POS or anything but when I first saw it it was literally gleaming. There was a Coke machine nearby and the reflection in the bonnet was like a mirror. You honestly can't see the stuff unless you get up really close, and then obviously you can just see the edge where the shield ends at, for example, the very leading edge of the bonnet where it dips into the recess behind the front bumper. There is one seam on the whole car and that is where the roof goes into the C-pillar, but you have to be looking for it to see it.
To my eye, the paintwork actually looks like it sparkles more than it did, and they say this is a common thing with metallic paints; however there are no marks, bubbles, ghosting or anything in the paintshield. It is truly impressive.
The guy who detailed it has taken a load of pictures which he is going to send to me. As it's pouring down here I drove it back in the wet, then hosed it off whilst still wet on the drive and the water was running off it like ... well, like nothing I've seen before. It has had a wax applied over the paintshield so that is no doubt the reason behind this, but it looks mighty impressive. As soon as I have those pics from the detailer I will post them up, but early feelings are "very impressed". Will try to take some pics later once it's dried off.
This is the only join on the whole body that you can see, and it's because there isn't a piece of shield big enough apparently. You can see it here because the sun is right on it, but in 'normal' light you can't really see it.
Yes, just the usual polishing/cleaning process. If the protection film gets scratched by grit or anything, just pour warm water over it and the scratches vanish. The film itself is pretty bulletproof. I was out in the car yesterday and got caught in the snow so it's now filthy. I have a new Nilfisk arrive this week so I'll give it a good blast off tomorrow assuming it isn't absolutely freezing like it is now
