Strange whining tapping noise, now turned into nasty clunking!!

Driving to work this morning and I got up to 60 when I could hear the above noise, don't really know how else to explain it. Sounds like it's coming from just in front of me, maybe the back of the engine, Onlyhappens when I'm accelerating tough. I can't hear anything when the car is in situ. As soon as I let me foot off the throttle then it stops even when left in gear but when I put it down again it returns?

Any ideas what it might be. I'm gonna go out in a bit and have a look under it so thinkgs to check would be appreciated. The car is a 1983 2.5 lux model.

Cheers

Try shouting at them. Look around the back of the engine, see whether you can see what is knocking against something else. When you say the current mounts look OK, what are you comparing them with? Oli.

tried shouting, they justsat there looking at me funny, not to mention the neighbours lol I can't see anything knocking but it doesn't make the noise when just revving it.... It only 2 mounts though isn't it?? one either side. They don't look perished and the engine doesn't seem to move anymore than usual, should it move at all though?

The shouting comment was 'cos of the use of capitals in your last post ... ! [;)] Mounts - I honestly don't know. The suggestion was because such symptoms are usually the sign of an engine moving as it exerts force on the drivechain, and engines tend to move more when the mounts are past it. Someone who knows more will be along soon, I'm sure ... Oli.

I'd agree with the mounts suggestion. When they fail it's usually the exhaust side and it collapses (through failing internally so there is nothing to see from the outside) so the engine can touch the steering shaft. It happens under acceleration because you need a torque reaction to twist it sufficiently in the mount to touch the shaft. I think it will get worse and happen more often.

Definitely not the mounts, just changed the gearbox oil to see if that quietened anything down and it's made it about 10 times worse, Now when you pull off or roll etc for that matter there is a clunk which vibrates through the car. Definitly coming from the rear and does it in and out of gear. Get the feeling something is seriously goosed, just need to figure out what now... There was a couple of small metal filings in the oil, not many but I don't think that can be good.... Don't understand why it clunks in and out of gear though?? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Cheers Chris

Is it a noise that varies with engine speed ... like a loose tappet (or two)? Driving my '86 944 Lux here on the continent I notice a tappet type noise when on the throttle (it sounds worse (ie louder) when the sound is reflected off the armco when the driver's window is open). Yet, at idle and 'off throttle' there is no noise - could it be wear in the valve train - when I had the head done recently, I only replaced valves/guides/seals and springs ... everything else was judged good enough to be used again. If this no use to you - apologies!

To be honest I didn't get past 5MPH.... It's a big heavy clunking, actually slows the car down like someones just touching the breaks. It's at the same consistency too. Definitly coming from the back of the car tho... Could it be the diff??? thats the only thing I can tink of that would clunk in or out of gear

Well it's definitely transmission by the sounds of it. I don't believe that there is a common issue back there so I can't really suggest specifically what might be up.

Oh, so it's coming from the back of the car now? Transmission. Yup. And that's a big topic ... and if it has been radically changed by changing the oil in the gearbox (and nothing else has changed), it sounds gearbox-related ... can't help further than that. Trip to an indie to see what they think it is? Oli.

Right, please don't think I'm being patronising or anything here as it's the kind of thing I could see myself doing by accident if I was very busy. As changing the transmission oil made such a massive and disastrous difference, you haven't per chance emptied the old oil out become distracted and then shut everything up again without actually putting any oil in it have you? Maybe I shouldn't make such a daft suggestion, but it'd be a very simple cause considering the dramatic difference.

Matt, I knew there was a reason we get on well ... that's precisely the sort of mistake I make ... ! [:D] Oli.

I once got the gearbox replaced on a Mk1 Escort (shows how long ago both in the type of car and also that I didn't do it myself). It was delivered back with no oil in the 'box. It lasted about 50 miles. I'd have thought the wrong grade rather than no oil at all is a more likely mistake if that's part of the problem though.

LOL... there's definitely oil in it... I do think maybe I did the filler bolt up a little to tight, reading through the manual it says this should be tightened to 27nm.... Mine might be a little tighter than this so maybe it's gone in too far and something is hitting it!! I'm on the same thought line as you guys though, what did I do to make such a drastic difference and that's the only thing I can think.... Have to wait and see tonight when I get home

Sounds like it could be CV joints. You can tacke them off and re-pack them with grease, though if the noise has got that bad, its likely a bearing has broken up not just dry. Get them off (need a tiple square bit) and have a look. Instructions on Clarkes garage manual.
