Strange whining tapping noise, now turned into nasty clunking!!

I doesn't sound like CVs to me - I thought of them myself but then thought why would that get significantly worse immediately after the oil change? They don't make such a severe noise as this seems to be either.

I'm thinking it's the diff now, Jacking up the back end tonight and started turning the rear wheels, now correct me if I'm wrong but both wheels should turn smoothly in oposite directions when spun with the engine off. Mine don't actually constantly turn together when spinning one of the wheels by hand. There is a clunk then the other will start and then stop again till theres another clunk where it will move a little bit again. I'm thinking the oil change is just a red herring and I was just lucky to get it home... Soo my questions is this. Is it possible to just change the diff or am I better off finding a whole gearbox? Cheers for all the comments!!!

You could just change the diff if you can keep the old crown wheel as the pinion gear will have worn to the old crown gear. I have a different crown gear in mine and whilst it works ok it is noisy particulary if you coast.

Not difficult just heavy work getting the box out/back in. You could take the drive shafts off, (repack/inspect them while their off). In the centre of the output flanges is a 6mm allen bolt, undo this and you can then undo all the bolts which hold the side cover on, lever off the side panel and take a look inside. I have never taken off the cover with the box in the car but worth a try. The pic shows the round cover that needs to come off to inspect the diff
