Stupid Hatch

My car is starting to annoy me as it just pops open by itself.

Does anybody know how to fix this or is it better just going into the garage.

Does it only open when you' re driving at speed? What about if you just pull up on the spoiler hard enough? It could be the jaws are slightly seized and are only holding the pin very lightly. Liberal use of WD40 on the jaws then cycling the hatch release motor a few times might help.

The other option is that an electrical fault is causing the motor to run - you should be able to hear this happening, especially if you take the boot carpet out.
 
Ah the old " Pops open by its self" problem.

Pull back the boot carpet and operate the key in the hatch lock. The lock will pull a couple of rods which release the boot manualy - you will feel these down by the latches themselves. These rods can have a habbit of sticking " open" and just need a flick if the hatch doesn' t latch. Flick as necessary and lubricate liberaly with 3 in 1, or similar, oil and your problems will be over. Perhaps!

Just remember:-

If you hatch will not latch,

Flick the rod to release the catch. [:D]
 
Apart from dirty latches which don' t catch the pins wear (they should be flat on top) cleaning them will reveal the wear, turning them round sometimes helps but new replacments are approx ÂŁ6 from OPC

...but be careful you don' t shear them off! They corrode into the plates quite badly.

Another possibility is that the pins are adjusted too close to the glass, so they don' t stick far enough through the catches. That was the problem the only time I have had this issue and I just screwed them out slightly then relocked them with the lock nut. Don' t over do it or the hatch will rattle because it isn' t on the seal tightly enough.
 
Marcus - while we' re talking hatches, was it you who was having trouble with the hatch not opening with the key? Did you get this fixed? It' s just that I had this problem too, and I just recently fitted a new microswitch. ÂŁ8 delivered from PorschApart, and about 10 mins to fit...sorted! [:)]
 
Wow! Can you tell how many of us have had tailgate problems? [:-]

Another thing to check is if the two catches inside the boot are overtightened. Pull back the carpet and you will see they are both held on by two bolts. Loosen these very slightly then turn the key in the lock watching if the catches now open and close freely.

I' ve got this too, except in my case its intermittent sometimes it works sometimes it dosen' t. The switch in the car works fine.
 
Robbie, mine was only intermittent for a few days before it went completely. The switch inside the car works fine, so I had to push it and then sprint to the back and try to lift the hatch before the latches closed again!! [:mad:] Doing that in the Tesco car park gets a few funny looks, I can tell you! Apparently microswitch failure is not uncommon, so it might be worth trying a new one since they' re cheap.

Mine will either:-

a) Re-latch if the hatch doesn' t open. [:(]

b) Stay unlatched so that shutting the drivers door produces enough pressure to push the hatch up. [:)]

c) Lift all by its self - when the switch is opperated. [:D]

Option " c" is more common on hot days, I' m assuming that is because the gas in the struts is generating more pressure.
 
Sounds like you both have better struts than me [:D]. My struts are knackered so they don' t lift the hatch, and it just re-latches - hence the sprint to the back of the car! I suppose I could also tighten the pins so that the pressure of the seal lifts the hatch just high enough to stop it re-latching....hmm....
 
New struts do make a hell of a difference. It' s very nice to pull up, press the button, then have the rear hatch open ala James Bond ejector seat. Often just one new strut will make the difference, but it will expose any weak latches or latch pins that you have (i.e it may start popping up as you drive along) and then a small job becomes more frustrating [:(] Luckily these are all cheap parts and very DIY' able

I' ve always wondered about this popping up all on its own bit.

If you are in a garage isn' t there a danger of the hatch hiting the garage roof?
