Sudden Clutch Failure?

If it's the original clutch, then presumably it's rubber centred? In that case it wouldn't fail suddenly would it?

 
I thought the turbos and S2 didn’t have the rubber centre anyway? I stand to be corrected - but yes, I have limped home after suffering a broken rubber.

I did think about rephrasing that...
 
The original S2 clutches did have a rubber centre. They changed the design some years ago for a proper sprung one and hence replacement ones don't have the rubber.

However if your clutch is indeed the original one (which I find amazing!) then it will have the rubber centre.

Mine (at 238k) is a rubber centre clutch. No idea if it is original (might browse through the paperwork sometime)
 
Whatever centre it might have, it is surely a record for clutch longevity - no wonder it gave no warning.
Hope you get to the bottom of it, ‘broken rubber’ or whatever...
 
I had a new clutch fitted around 2005 and by then they had gone to spring centred, original clutches defo rubber centred and ISTR posts from many years ago about them tearing apart as a failure mode when old.
 
Well it is now out, and sure enough the centre has ripped out of the ring that supports the friction material. That said, it is pretty much down to the rivets after 210+k miles. It is marked as Sachs, so if anyone is in two minds over the quality of their clutches, it has lasted longer than the original one did (OK, I cannot say how it was driven in the first 150k miles). I should have said - it is a sprung clutch, no rubber, so it isn't the original - and I should have known that anyway, since I have taken the engine out of the car twice previously and had a good look at it! Sorry I had forgotten about that! All I need to do now is put it back together...
