Supercharging the 944?!

one job that I have on my list Colin is to get the Arnnworx TB seal kit, most if not all of our TB seals will be well past there sell by dates by now so even if you don't get around to modifying your TB it may be worth at least fitting new seals.

After speaking to Jenvey they sent me pictures through of the 968 set up with 9M which didnt work out well apparantly, however if I can find a weber dcoe style inlet manifold they can supply the parts to fit.
Where would I find one though?

Cheers Ed, spoke to Bogg Brothers and they can fabricate the inlet manifold to suit the jenvey ITB's for around £250-£300.

My only concern is why hasnt this been done before and why did 9m scrap their project, or am I missing something?

Might be worth a chat to 9m to find out why they didn't bother

A few things spring to mind

packaging - not easy to accommodate the inlets without removing brake servo etc.. The 9m solution looked like one way of getting round it, but then you ave issues with plenum etc...

ems - standard motronic isn't going to work so you need to go aftermarket map based - can be ££ Tom barker could be your man here if he extends his range into S2's.. http://www.augmentautomotive.co.uk/

demand - ITB's probably not allowed by PCGB so no demand from the racers

tuning - lots of variables - need to play with intake lengths for optimum setup - see Dave Walker on this one

cost - see all of the above really..

Then there may be other limiting factors such as intake valve size, valve springs etc.. (more power usually means higher rpm's)

So for a 50 ish HP increase, could be a lot of money.

Which is probably why people buy 944 turbos....they then spend that money and more keeping them running [:D]

Why would you have the inlet tract so long and curved. The throttles are pointing into the engine bay = hot air WHY?
I have gone over on to rennlist as you tend to find a fair amount of tuners on there.I found a thread were a guy had buit a 3.2lt S2 engine with throttle bodies it produces 400bhp at 8000 rpm. That's what I am talking about and that is what can be achieved without forced induction and by using modern technology when building an engine. Surely it will be better than a turbo......

It's a stunning car

I wonder how much the engine was - do you think he got any change out of £10k?

I think it comes down to demand. Why would you spend thousands on developing a product which will cost close to the value of the car to which it is intended to be fitted?

We have to accept in this day and age that, as 944 owners, we are a little eccentric. The cars are worth relatively little and, with the way cars have developed over the years, any performance difference becomes more marginal with newer second hand cars of a similar value.

You might sell a high end performance bolt on to one or two 944 owners where as you could sell pretty much the same piece of kit to hundreds of Boxster/Cayman/Cayenne owners.

That's a very nice effort, but what's the torque like? Maybe I have not looked hard enough but I have not seen a torque curve...

I am sure that this thing may be slightly peaky to drive, with a torque band perched even higher than on a turbo.

Without a doubt. I wonder how it ticks over too - with difficulty at 1,500RPM no doubt and itll be virtually undrivable below 3,000RPM, maybe more.

I know it will be a little difficult. But it is a race car and it will sound amazing......... Also if we ever start thinking about how much we spend on our cars relative to their value then we would all drive boxters or caymens or even one of thoose big fat beettle things.

Got my prices sorted now, inlet mani £300, Jenvey TB's £600+vat
Ecu is being looked at by friend of mine, I'll wait to see what he thinks before I order anything.

Err... not really [:)]
I probably have "invested" 3 times what I initially paid for the turbo and I feel like I have a much faster + more special + practical + easy to work on car than either of the ones you mentioned. I think spending £40k in buying a 944T + making it "right" represents better value over the long term, to me at least, than blowing such an amount on a used, more modern "sports" car that will never have the flavour of an older car, at least to a person from my generation, and which will keep losing its value further.
