Supercharging the 944?!

One of our club members has an LSx conversion for racing - bought it already done. I don't know if the engine has been modified for more power but apparently the clutch/transaxle is pretty easy to break even with soft treatment - low end torque is hard to manage apparently.

Is it RHD? would be very interested in knowing more if it is!
Tony

Sorry for the late reply - the car is LHD - we are in Canada and I believe his car came out of the US.

Well I've looked at all the options available and have decided more power from the 3.0 is going to be too costly and will no doubt result in the car being sat in my workshop more than it gets driven. The car is well balanced and has all the right bits done to it so I either enjoy it or sell it and go for a 996 or the rpm boxster csr....which would be a similar cost to getting more power from the S2!

probably a good idea

I will keep pestering tom about making his ecu for the s2. if he can get 15-20% more from a lux, and can do something similar in an s2...

I felt like I could do with a bit more power at spa - as the gt3's and m3's flew past me up the kemmel straight

My wife was almost ready to say "how much is this one going to cost" but it seems I'm getting sensible as I get older!!

Might put an advert on PH for the 944 and see where it takes me, I doubt it will sell quickly so I can enjoy it until or if it goes?
The only thing with a more powerful car is more cost, my M3 was a perfect road car but for the track they need to be stiff which can lead to the infamous rear sub frame cracking.
I really like the look of the RPM boxster but the mileage is pretty high and then the 996 comes with it's own costly issues.
If Tom can extract more power from the S2 i'd be up for that too, keep pestering him!!! [:D]

Did Promax not do a chip for the S2? I'm sure they did or even still do.Also the last of the S2's (se) had a chip that gave them more power I think.

Yes I have that (the Promax chip)

Marginal gains though (although excellent fuel economy - 450 miles on a tank coming back from Spa, plenty of 80-90mph cruising in that)

I have a full exhaust and big filter so might be worth fitting the Promax chip but I doubt if it would feel much different!

The promax chip is definitely a worthwhile improvement. I had the luck of being able to dyno my car before and after it was fitted. Whilst peak power increase is minimal at about 8-10bhp its not really what the chip is about. It does a good job of smoothing the flat spot in the mid range and also increases torque by about 20% in the same area (mine went from 100ftlb at 3500rpm stock to 120ftlb at 3500rpm chipped). It translates to a more responsive throttle and certainly makes the car feel more eager and a tad quicker. Probably the best £99 spent on the car.

For the ultimate, ChipWizards can do a custom map that will get the max out of your engine, but its not cheap at £300-400 a pop, but then tuning never is....

If people were to put 16V engines on 8V engine management for example put a 16V engine into a lux I would have no trouble supporting a supercharged 16V engine.

That's an answer to a different question I think [;)]

Right I am going to call Andrew in the morning.I think I need one of his chips.
I've got another quick build to do after the S2.And then I will look into throttle boddies etc. But that will be next winter at the earliest so a promax chip will do the job over the summer. Then I think I will start with a new( read old but different to the one in the S2) engine and build it for fast road and a bit of track before fitting it into the car.

Chip delivered this morning and fitted, took the car for a blast on my usual 'quick' route to compare and I'm very happy with how the car feels!

Would be interesting to put her on a dyno to see how the janspeed exhaust, filter and chip have improved things....

Good job! For what its worth I also found fitting iridium plugs had a similar effect (although not as marked) but again made the car feel more eager + responsive, I would like to do a back to back dyno run with them as I'm sure they add a little, which cant be bad for a set of plugs imo...

Edd

It just had plugs before I got it Edd, but when it's needs new ones I'll put the iridium ones in..

Do you run yours on 95ron or 98/99ron?

99ron, shell or tesco's only (usually). With the chip you can run 95ron but it feels a bit lacking imo, I use 97ron only if a cant get the other two.
