Suspension advice please

std 70040, try Peter Tognola in datchet, very very knowledgable on 993's, great work, great price and he or his partner greg do it themselves - no apprentices here!

He also has his own 993RS clubsport nad has all the proper tools etc

No affiliation I use him myself, worth my while travelling from Oxford

You dont need the special tool, any good race shop will set a 993 up,all they do is measure the rear end over its complete travel and set
You will get bump steer if you lower your car more than the range the car was designed,as in terms of suspension travel.Unless you change your suspension to rs or gt,you can minimise with settings not standard to the book,or the car was simply not set correctly in the first place.
Thats why 993rs are differant ,its not just ride height, look at the shape of the wheel carriers and steering rods on a rs and then on your standard 993(porsche dont change this for no reason)The gt2 is another step up the ladder ,the rear end subframe has spacers in it,to allow the rear suspension to work in a more parallel path, and again reduce bump steer even further, the road gt2 cars have this as well as the race gt2.
My rs has all these mods on the rear end, a lot noiser, but the differance is great,no rear end steering, or slop.
Some german race teams have gone even further and welded new mounts on the sub frame for there toe arm and camber arms etc(even on 996 cup cars)
A good friend has a 964rs running back at standard rs height, the car handles much better and is faster aginst the clock!
keep up the good work, have now worked out how to post again, the damn firewall was stopping me do this, but only on this web site!

Its healthy to disagree,All i am saying is that you can set these up with a person who is a motorsport engineer rather than a service/set up from a book engineer, motorsport engineers can set these up and do,and they can preload the car .
If its a standard car,and you want standard set ups then use the main dealers or specialist, with there tools !If you want more, use a motorsport specialist.
I would say from a long and expensive learning curve on set up /handling of 993 cars, that rather than spend your money on lowering, changing dampers, springs etc invest in a good set up for your prefered use or main use,ie track, fast road,or hillclimbing/sprinting etc
Then next would be a set of good tyres, and change them at least every 2 years, when you can no get no more out of the car ,start the mod route.
I have just taken my jrz dampers of the rs,triple adjustable fantastic dampers.Put my old standard rs dampers back on,which have done 50kmiles,and i got back to consistant standing start times to the 64 feet beam and on average 2 tenths faster in just the 64 feet, also the car felt much more stable through the fast corners.
The story is,unless you can set it up properly, leave it alone standard.
Car set up is a science and not from a book, although a book is a good starting point.
Just to give you a example from porsche motorsport,on how criticle tyres are to set up etc, porsche give 4 differant settings for 4 differant tyre manufactures.
Once you lower your car, change your springs, dampers, stiffer bushes etc it is no longer standard!
With out going and looking it up, what is the differance on a M030 setup over standard, may well be interesting to see if its the same or not.

I would gladly help you with it,i can get my man along for a day some where,or even at my house,i have a lift and large garage. We can show you my rs,gt2 road car,gt2 race car,and a special bare shell at the moment, which was one of the famous roock chassis that raced at lemans in 97&98,which has got some real trick chassis mods, that dare i say it,possibly better than the factory gt2 racers! It is a factory gt2 race car, that roock purchased six bare shells and then modified to there own spec.

Paul, you wouldn't like to turn that into a 993 Registers event, would you ? As long as you could stand the sight of people slavering at the cars ....

Whatever, I'll certainly take you up on the offer, and it seems there is already support !

cheers, Maurice [:D]

Sounds like a brilliant idea. I would definitely be interested in such an event as I think there is much to learn and understand on this subject.

993 event will be fine, suggest on a day in the bettter weather, and not on a race day!
we should have the race calender in early jan sorted,so can then plan a day.
I can lay on a bbq,by providing the heat, may be the club providing the meat!
Also get mel along with his cup car, plenty of room for parking etc, lots of local b&b etc.
