Swapped my R for a GT4

Hi Steve,

I had my geo re-set recently at Track Torque, it had definitely slipped out of adjustment.

I'm middle/middle although I did try the hard setting at the rear on track at Blyton but Ben (Rennspeed) quickly swapped it back as it slewed around almost as if I'd got a slow puncture.

Interested to hear from the OP re the geo work done, how it feels on road/track afterwards etc. I have also moved from a CR to a GT4, but haven't driven the new car much yet, and its completely stock at the moment. Will be at PCGB trackday Silverstone. So the geo work gives more adjustability - makes it handle better / less understeer and helps with tyre wear..... anything else? Ballpark cost? Presume it voids warranty?
Hi JR, I'm having the geo checked/adjusted on Thursday. Nothing fancy, I just want to make sure it's within spec as the geo can get knocked out by general road driving. I guess it hasn't been checked since new. Only takes a big pothole or kerb to knock it out of line. They'll set it up for fast road driving which usually means a bit more negative camber and checking ride height and corner weights. I'll probably have a little bit of toe in at the front. Although that can create a little bit more understeer, it's the way I like it. Cost wise it'll be an hour or two labour so about £150. They're old school and use camber gauges, string and mirrors which is how they set up race cars at the track side so there's no extra cost for laser equipment.

TBH I've found the car to be so stable on the road I doubt they will find anything to be seriously out of line. No effect on warranty - it's just checking and adjusting nuts and bolts really.
Thanks for the update Steve. Look forward to hearing how it handles after the check-over.

Looks like my butt feeling was correct. All measurements were within factory spec. For those interested they were: -1.5 camber all round. Total front toe 5 minutes (slight toe in). Total rear toe 20 minutes. Casters were 9.0. They suggested that since the car would be mostly road use that no changes were needed. Whilst more negative camber on the front would help on the track, it would be detrimental to excessive inner tyre wear on the road. Roll bars were both on the middle settings so no change their either. All in all I wasn't surprised by the findings because my impression right from the start has been that this is the most composed and sure footed Porsche I've ever driven.

My tyres at -2.2/-1.8 camber were even across the tyre all round 5k miles only 4 track days so 400 miles and 3.6k road miles ., every single GT4 I have seen has bad outter wear even road cars if pushed.

I have seen some shocking cars at OPC with bent outer treads !! tracked on oem geo's and part exed !!!

Shame you did not add a bit as I do find them a terrible drive oem, so much so I was close to selling within a month but the geo transformed it.

David, you push your cars harder than me. I am unlikely to see 1.5G on the track let alone on the road so was happy to take their advice (they know how I drive and have always set up my cars). There's no sign of uneven wear on the fronts (original tyres) or the rears that were taken off that the OPC gave me to keep for spares. So my guess is that the car has not seen much, if any, track time yet (OPC believes the previous owner did not do track days). Of course, I might change my mind about the settings once I do my first track days (Spa at end of June). [:)]

Just back from a fantastic trip to Spa Francorchamps and Zolder circuits where the GT4 was well and truly christened. Spa as ever was brilliant and although Zolder is up there as one of the best tracks I've driven it showed up the GT4's achilles heel.....it is just too loud for a 95 db driveby. Despite trying to lift and coast past the meters (as we were told to do by the marshalls) both me and ChrisW had to take an early bath.

No such problems at Spa. Here's a video of some of the laps:

By the end of the day I was going much quicker than I did last year in the Cayman R. As you will see from the video Kev was a very similar pace in his Cayman R...my only excuse is that he was driving out of his skin during the trip! [:D]

Looks a great trip :), shame about "Zolder" it's so daft these cars which are ment for track fail track regs...

Steve,

Enjoyed watching your and Kevin's Spa laps in the GT4 and CR respectively. It's a brilliant circuit. Reassuring to see well behaved other drivers too.

Agree with David's comments on Zolder regs. 95db noise limit is pants.

Anyone for Knockhill on July 14th? I'll be there and looking forward to it. Hope the good weather holds.....

Brian

Steve,

Me too … albeit three years on.

Having just put a deposit on one, without flesh seeing / driving it [:-] [:D] I`m heartened by your and others feedback here - thank you.

Especially your quote below and me having a similar reason to change from my 981 CS PDK ( a much better car than the hallowed CR on the roads up here [8D] [:)] )

My only prior references being a short conversation with a local owner and the plethora of other `net areas on the subject.

" And I already think that the GT4 is a more compliant road car than the CR "

This compliance subject plus wanting to experience PDK / PASM were the reasons that I moved on from the CR after only a year and 9,000 miles.

I`ll not get my hands on the car until July though, elongated travel - work commitments [:(]
