switches

ORIGINAL: MikeParryJones

I don't have the four switches on my S. Just the three. My bumper lights come on with the flasher on the steering column. First switch position prings the headlights up with the side lights on and then main beam on the second position.

Hi Mike, we seem to share a similar 'pop up' experience on our cars [;)]........ What year is your car?

Phil

With 944's IIRC 87 to 89 the lights pop up in the first position, something to do with dim dip laws earlier and later cars you have sides with pods down.

very strange, just to add a little extra spice to this switch theme, as i said my lights in the bumper come on in the first postion of the switch and then the main headlights pop up and are on in the second postion, and like pauls if i then swtich back to the first postion the main lights stay poped but are off with the bumper lights still on, and then return only when the switch is completely off.

Get this - i saw a 944 which was parked with its main headlights on (Popped) and after about 3mins they put themselves away, the engine was off and the owner was in blockbusters getting a vid- my wife finally dragged me away before i could talk to the owner. Mine don't do this ?? they will stay on until the battery runs flat[]

Aren't you all glad I started this thread ???????? [:D][:D] Let's see if we can get it onto a 3rd page.

This weekend I'm going to get the kids to stand at the front and back and tell me what all the lights do as I press various buttons. Bet you can't wait to find out.....

Hey, what fun it is in our household !

Phil

I guess I should have read the manual first, but here's what my Drivers Manual says on page 24

"Light Switch (two stage)
1st stage (ignition off) - parking lights on and retracting headlights come up.
1st stage (ignition on) - parking lights and low-powered dipped headlamps.
2nd stage (ignition on) - headlights on full power (high or low beam).

The rear lights, the licence plate and instrument panel lights are on in either position; the blue indicator lights up when high beam is selected.

Instrument lighting
The instrument lighting comes on as soon as the vehicle lights are turned on. The brightness can be infinitely varied by turning the knurled knob"

So there you go, and that's just what mine do. Interestingly, at the front of the manual it says WKD924 020 88 700M 4/87 which I assume to mean it's a 1987 print of the manual, because the instructions I have copied above are on a sticker over the original text. At the bottom of the sticker it says 88-924S/P24 and amazingly this sticker goes on ...... page 24 ! So, perhaps something did change in the operation for the 1988 models and the sticker is hiding how the lights operated on previous models. I can't read through the sticker as it's quite thick paper.

Now, you may or may not be fascinated by that, but there you go.

I also note that on page 32 it show the switches down on the centre console (which is where all this started) and that does confirm three switches and one blank.

cheers ........... Phil

The light switch acts the same as yours on my 88 924S. Ive got the older manual without the sticker. Here's a photo of page 24
