Yes I'm definitely thinking there is a common age deterioration issue in the gauges themselves. Because nothing else makes sense when flicking the gauge can make it behave again. And of course the problem is intermittent, so could could easily "test" ok at any given time.
Will probably never know unless we come across a brand new gauge, which is highly unlikely! There is one particular ebay seller, in fact the one I got the PCB from, who lists about 40 of the gauges albeit all of them 30+ years old. And also David L I think has 4 gauges and all his do the same..............
It must work on some sort of sensitivity in order to give an accurate reading. My guess is it lies inside the gauge or in the "receiving" holes for the rugby ball prongs.
