That other place

Being as this forum is free (didn't 968UK charge you to register?), as big as you'd ever want and already has masses of 968 owners, why not just transfer it over here?

With the number of people already forum users here it can't be impossible to build it up to the same level, and at least you know this site isn't going anywhere, or ever planning to charge for access? [8|]

Sad day if Stu has killed it off. That site was like a gold mine of info.

Paul this forum could be massively improved by updating the forum software to something like that used on the "other place", searching for info on here is a painful experience at best.

What Neil said... The limitations in this forums functionality are a pain in the RS sometimes!!

And From a 968 POV the pcgb forum is a poor relation to the other place

OK, anyone know what's going on? As said above, for 968 owners the 968uk site was a hell of a lot better than here. I've looked at 968uk a few times today, now it's asking for authorisation and password and I can't log in.

Mr968 - please tell us what's happened to your forum!!

A real shame to see something so many of us have put so much time into get shelved. Same thing happened with 968.net way back in the day and all the old information was lost. Now we have all put time and effort into building up the knowledge base over there and that may be gone too. Hopefully its not permanent and if it is maybe Stu will hand the batton over to someone else and let them take on the database?

That's my point. This might be a clunky old platform but it works, and it's not going to be closed down. At least it's got to be worth backing another site's information up? [8|]

At least linking to other sites from here is a good idea, as Dave did with his 964 site.

The good part here is that we have our own 968 forum rather than being lumped in with the rest of the front engine brigade (as on TIPEC). The useless part here is the search facility, where I can seldom find anything useful - if the search returns any results at all! Personally, I hope we can persuade Stu to get 968uk back up again. The forum home page says " Due to the amount of time and resources that are needed to administer the forum it will be closed until more time and resources are available." Well' I'm not computer literate enough to assist with the running of a forum so can't help Stu there, but another necessary resource must be the cost of server space etc, where we could all help (if that is one of the problem resources). After all, we pay subs to PCGB, TIPEC membership also costs (although I believe that, like here, you can register for the forum without being a member).

The knowledge base on 968uk - both in the "archives" and through help from members - has been fantastic, even helping knowledgable indies (did you know that a Superchip has a daughter board that you have to remove to fit a Promax chip, or that the fuse for the wing mirrors is on a secondary fuse board at the side of the glove box). To loose that resoursce would be a crying shame.

Agreed!! Perhaps u cld take this up with out IT Director.....

Guys - hi. I have just spoken to Stu about the site to learn a bit more.

He has put a holding page up here if you have not seen it with a short statement. http://www.968uk.com/968uk-forum.php

There are essentially two issues that have surfaced. a) the time it takes to keep the site rolling along on a day to day basis b) the reappearance of a particular issue where a very few forum members were mentioning other parts supply businesses ie in contravention of the forum rules thus in direct competition with Stu's K300 operation.

This is the second time that Stu has had to take such action and he will not mind me saying that he is as disappointed as the rest of us. He is considering his options, waiting for the dust to settle a bit and will I am sure get back to us all with a way forward. Like you I will watch this space with interest.............

NB Paul, yes it does cost a tiny amount of money to join www.968uk.com and you get a badge for your trouble -- as I understand it, this registration requirement acts as a 'gatekeeper' and prevents hackers, web crawlers etc accessing the site. Thus preserving it's integrity.
(Of course the paid up membership of PCGB pays for this forum - so it is not free to everyone, ie the members end up subsiding anyone who gets on here FOC)

Thanks Paul,

the 968uk forum is now open, I am dealing with the situation that occurred, hopefully in a way that does not affect the rest of the members, sorry for the inconvenience chaps.

It may have been a thread of mine that cheesed him off. It was a wee while back now though.

I must say I find the whole dynamic of "that other site" pretty weird. As for knowledge a well known owner/ user of the site was kicked off after a similar disagreement. By doing so we lost a lot of potentially valuable experience from thereon in. A huge amount as it goes.

I've been on a few such car forums over the years and I've never encountered features such as that site has. I do sort of get the rationale but petulant fits like this appear to hold the site's existence to hostage. Which, in the grand scheme of things, is just plain absurd.

Cheers, Hedge

P.S. It does seem to be open again? I was just on it prior to visiting here.

Paul McNulty:
just to be clear as paulf968 has mentioned the miniscule cost that is paid prior to joining 968uk is for a couple of badges and p+p, there is no 'membership fee' unlike PCGB.
As a PCGB member I pay a membership fee each year as other 968 owners do and Paul Follett does a fantastic job of running the articles in the Porsche Post, can you tell me what else specifically as a 968 owner PCGB has done for me for the membership fee.

ORIGINAL: Mr968

can you tell me what else specifically as a 968 owner PCGB has done for me for the membership fee.

It took me all of half a second to come up with the answer - it starts "Sweet", ends "All" and has one word in the middle. However, having a silent register secretary may explain some of that - maybe it will change now he's resigned.

Now, if the question had been "What has my region of PCGB done...", the answer would have been totally different!
