ORIGINAL: Big Dave

The data logging video is a REALY good tool + theres definately "nowhere to hide now"..
Ill have to be getting to grips with mine , when we finally get racing...

So I see your a convert now then Dave [:D], I think the potential advantages are huge. I know I talked about it a lot in the past but its something I have avoided due to the cost. I do have my video camera though but no mount as yet.

Neil.
I knew youd pick me up on that....[:D][;)][:D][;)]
Ive actually had one for about 3 weeks or so... I bought a pre owned one, in doing so reducing the inital outlay somewhat, but i still need the video bit,, NOT cheapÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁ. Not wired it in yet though...
I saw how it could be used to good effect on Saturday, once you know how + where you should be on the circuit .
This is where local knowledge counts. Find somebody who knows there way round the particular track your at , then get them to analise the footage / data + get them to explain the poss areas of improvement...
Im not advocating its a must have in the first year, but a definate help to move up the standings of whatever race series your doing...

No doubt about it local knowledge is hugely valuable, when I am up at Oulton next year I will be looking for tips no doubt. I might even find if you or Stu is right about Druids [:D].

I am sure that is right Dave. I had my first drive today in the S2 at this mornings Mallory test session. I will post some pictures tomorrow and talk more about it then but basically happy with where I am at, did 3 laps in the 57's in my 2nd full session in the car then had a big spin going into Gerrards. Only later John tells me I was braking as late as a Honda that was going round (Mike Jordan I believe) in 54's. 110 to 115 on the exit though is somewhat rewriting my whole set of experience parameters. Just getting my head round it all at the moment though going much much faster in a car than I have ever got anywhere near before. Should have got down into 56's if the spin hadn't of shock me up. Loads more to come from the car as well but just trying to get used to the thing at the moment.

Blooming exciting though ain't it [8D].

Paul don't for one second underestimate how much you have inspired a good few ppl on this forum, my self especially so.

Well done Neil, you were lucky to come out of Gerrards in one piece, if the kitty litter doesn't ensnare you on entry then the slight bump on the exit sends you off.
Getting 57's is pretty damned fine [:)]

What do you reckon to Devils Elbow and did you short-shift before it?

Cheers Paz, I tried to catch the slide. The thing is the car was weaving around a lot under brakes, only the lap before I had a dab of opposite lock on turn in and stupidly I decided to try and brake later again the next lap [&o]. I did feel pretty bad about it as I was following a mental program rather than thinking intelligently about what I was doing. In essence because I had got away with it a few times I kept pushing that limit. TBH though the spin was the highlight of the day in hindsight for 2 reasons, 1) I know where the grip limit is now on turn in 2) As soon as I could see I was sideways and running out of road I stood on the brakes. It was an instinct action really and luckily I scrubbed enough speed off to park the car half in the kitty litter and half on the grass which unfortunately meant I needed a pull to get the rear tyres out. Could have been a proper smash up though so a big time relief.

Definitely get 4th before turning in to the elbow then its foot to the floor all the way down and round onto the straight. I liked that bit but it always felt like the car is gripping so much you think is it going to stick?, but it always did. Comparing my pace to the other cars I could have gone faster in the first 1/3rd of Gerrads, faster into the Esses, harder earlier on the throttle everywhere especially the hairpin and get the Elbow consistent. I don't think I ever got one lap where everything fitted together just right so the fact I had a block of laps all within about 1/2 a second of each other was a bit misleading perhaps. Each time out I was about 2 to 3 seconds faster and putting things into perspective this is my first time ever in any race car and only the 2nd time on track in 3 years, the other being the ARDS test. Also fluffed a lot of gear changes as its been so long since I last drove an S2 (our 968 is a tiptronic) and never managed to heel and toe either even though I used to be able to do it fine, so I gave up on that bit, would have helped braking for the hairpin for example.

You can tell there is a lot going on in my mind at the moment [:D]

'inspiring people' that was a nice sentiment, thx -- as long as you (or your significant other) don't chase after me because of all the money that is being spent - I'm fine with that !!!

On a similar note I am trying to finalise a package for the Britcar 24hr race in a BMW 130i, my dear wife just overheard me offering a quarter drive to someone and she almost fell over when she heard the cost. Some damage limitation required there!

Tell me about Paul. I joked earlier at work that my current performance level is possibly the worst possible result for ones wallet [:D]. If I was rubbish I could have just said have a little fun do a race or two and use the car for track days etc. now though I can see the gap isn't that big at this stage and I should be able to find the extra time, chasing time as we all know is what leads to so much of the wallet emptying. The ride height is a little high at the moment which is my fault, the shocks and springs are spec'ed by me to a fast road set so about 25% softer than what EMC tend to use for S2's, or I guess would have spec'ed themselves. When I post the pics you will see what I mean about the ride height. I also don't have an LSD or rebuilt motor (172K on this one) so loads yet to come from both of us.

Paul when you first got your orange race car what did you do to get used to it? My car is made to be fully road legal but I decided in the end not to drive it to the races, however I half feel I should drive it around a little, practice heel and toe again get more comfortable with the feel of being in the car so I don't do stupid things like miss a gear change every other lap.

Neil -- One trackday was enough to feel comfortable in the car, what does take more time is adjusting things to achieve an optimum set up. This took me quite a while including issues with the shocks, some fiddling with spring rates and corner weighting etc etc. Even then you never know if it is as good as it could be!

Thanks Paul, very happy with the setup of the car. In the end we got to a setup almost identical to what Kev put on it in the workshop. I should have qualified the statement, very comfortable going round in about 1 min but less so doing the 57's. As earlier on my comfort threshold was more like 1:05 I guess I just need more time in the car, can easily see where I am loosing those 2 or 3 seconds and it ain't the car. I was probably loosing over a second just in the first part of Gerrards due to not attacking it enough, and another second due to lack of consistency.

Lots of action with 944's racing at Mallory on 29th (see 944 forum) -- over at Castle Coombe, we had two x 20 minute races. No stories of race winning skill, here is how it unfolded.

SOMETIMES HOPES DON'T GET REALISED

Arrived at a sunny and windy Castle Coombe with hopes that my results would be along the lines of my recent Oulton races.

As it happened the positives are that I found about 1.5 seconds compared to 2009, the car is running well, I finished both races and stayed clear of any of the minor body damage or gremlins that affected others.

The downside is that I finished quali and both races 9th in Class. So very little to show for a weekends racing, onto Silverstone of Fri/Sat 1st & 2nd Oct for the final round, a triple header.

Quali was easily won by Marcus Carniel, I had new rear tyres and with only 15 minutes to scrub them in and post some times it all went quickly . Did get very close to a 1m 18, so was pleased but then found that rather too many people were ahead of me.

Race1, I got off to a slow start and I was over cautious through the first bend called Quarry and lost more spaces and then had Class 2 cars all round me like a rash. Same place on the second lap and Lambert up front was a spinner, then Bates got a tap from Bennet just in front of me, lots of tyre smoke and spinning with Bates ending up hitting Lambert who was parked up in the tyres. Got through and set to work to get past the Class 2 cars of Bennet and Dyer, they were having a great time all over the place whilst I hovered waiting for my chance. It came a few laps later when Bennet had 4 wheels off on the exit of one corner, looked like he was going to hit the tyres as I went past BUT then he somehow collected it and came back like a rocket onto the tarmac -- he was going to hit me, so I took avoiding action to the infield which is flat grass. Went agricultural for about 200m including a massive slide with opposite lock, collected it all up and got on the tarmac to be 100m behind Bennet & Dyer. Car felt OK, but I drove like a complete plonker for the next couple of laps, made no progress and that was how it finished 9th in class but with two Class 2 cars ahead of me, so 11th overall.

Race 2. Lot less drama in this race, a better start and held position behind Masarati. Got away from the Class 2 cars as well so was 9th in a quite close train of cars behind Carniel the eventual winner. Got very tight behind Masarati & Ellis for the last 6 laps but we were evenly paced and no opportunities presented themselves. We crossed within 3 tenths of each other, so quite thrilling but the wrong result for me pointswise.

I live to fight another day .................................

Paul, it only takes a lap to bed new tyres in. They are at their best on the 2nd or 3rd lap.

So I have Mr Bennet to thank then for the extra damage !!

Hi Richard

Looks like you had a great second race though, with a 2nd position -- 2 seconds covering the first 5 cars, well done. Did the positions change at all during the race?

I obviously need some tips on qualifying with new rubber!! - I did not test, or it must be that my brain just took longer to get going at 9am on a Bank Holiday!!

The Bennet/Bates tap was IMO an honest racing incident -- Bennet close behind, Bates looking for the wider line on entry into Quarry and moving left -- bingo!

I managed to get past Mark Sumpter on lap 9 and onto Marcus' tail but then Marcus held me up at camp and Mark got back past which was annoying. I stuck with him though and got past again on the last lap. It was really exciting, especially as I was having a problem with the brakes into Quarry and Tower.

If you don't know a track well then you've got to test IMHO as 15 minutes qualifying is not enough to get to know the corners, braking points and gears. If you are struggling for grip then I always look at the tyres first as they go off very quickly. Fit new rubber and you'll go quicker without having to try. A track walk helps as well as you can have a look at the track surface. For example, on the exit of the first chicane the track is layed in 3m wide strips of tarmac, the middle strip is much gripier than the strip along the exit so it's faster to not use the full width of the track on the exit, especially when the surface is greasy.

Mr Bates came over to apologise for hitting me which was nice. A cheque to pay for the damage would be nicer but hey ho !

Is there somewhere to look at the times and results?Sounds like it was action packed[&:]...

Unlucky Paul, you had a better race then me though [&o]. When you say driving like a plonker you can't compare to how I managed to go 2.5 seconds a lap slower yet was much quicker in the most difficult long corner, so in reality probably loosing a good 3.5 seconds round the rest of the track.

So will Marcus do it this year?

3 proper vids here from the Oct Silverstone races -- no prizes for spotting me having an off in the 1st vid & 2nd lap !! Orange 968 No 90
